Greetings from Barstow
Well, we made it this far. After leaving Kingman this morning, we took a detour up County Route 1 along the Colorado River through the Topock Marsh, which is part of the Havasu Wildlife Reserve, hoping to see some migratory birds. I think it was too late for migratory birds. All we saw was a sad coyote roaming a picnic area, and a grackle trying to bum a treat.
The highlight turned out to be this place at "Golden Shores", where we got some sandwiches for lunch (which the grackle wanted a piece of):

They also had iced banana mocha treats and Chai tea, although we didn't partake. After that, we jumped back on I-40 and off again at Kelbaker road up through the Mojave National Preserve:
Rock formations, Mojave National Preserve
Desert cactus flower, Mojave National Preserve
Kelso Dunes, Mojave National Preserve
Union Pacific train station (abandoned? defunct? stopover for railroad employees?) in the middle of nowhere at Kelso, where there is allegedly a town according to the map (it was not observed by us.)As hot and remote and desolate as it was, the vistas and the desert wild flowers were beautiful. We ended up on I-15 for a quick jaunt south to Barstow.
Tomorrow, we have to take a break to answer some e-mails and fix some code. Then we're off to the Pacific Coast Highway, or somewhere in that vicinity.
P.S. Pupster is a real trooper. We're thinking of renaming her "Traveler". Her only problem is that she doesn't understand this rough terrain and sandy soil with plants that stick her in the nose when she's snurfling around or looking for a place to do her business. She can hold it a remarkably long time, though, so there's that.
OK, then.
