From the road in New Mexico
We had a wonderful day in New Mexico. We drove up to Santa Fe and visited the inspirational Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, had an excellent brunch/lunch at their cafe, and wandered around a bit. Some of it was a bit touristy a la Gatlinburg, but we found a great photography gallery/shop and a really nice painted tile/pottery shop.
After that we were behind schedule so we skipped Albuquerque. But We jumped off I-40 at Grants to visit the El Malpais National Monument. The photos below can't do it justice. After that it was a long afternoon/evening haul to Flagstaff through some beautiful New Mexico and Arizona landscape. Unfortunately, we missed the Petrified Forest. It closes at 5:00 PM.
Not sure where tomorrow will take us. Right now, after 1950 miles we're feeling like we've been rode hard and put up wet. But we're thinking we might throw out the loosely (i.e. not) planned "schedule" and slow down a bit to take in more of the incredible sights.
Some photos...
