Greetings from Arizona

We stayed in Flagstaff Friday night (I can highly recommend the Marriott Residence Inn) and decided to go up to the Grand Canyon after all. After spending most of the day in the Grand Canyon area, we only made it as far as Kingman last night. There's not much to say about it, except it's a place to sleep and there's a pretty good Mexican restaurant. Today it's on to somewhere in California, not sure where, to regroup and plan the Pacific Coast segment.

We went up 89 out of Flagstaff yesterday morning to visit the Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monument. We then headed across 64 into Grand Canyon from the east side. This was apparently a smart move, as there was a two to three mile line of traffic waiting at the main entrance. It was overcast and somewhat hazy at the Grand Canyon, so it wasn't a great day for photos but I managed to coax out a few with the help of Photoshop.

Some random observations:

  • Old people in funny pants can stand around looking at the most uninteresting things and go on talking about them forever while you're waiting for them to get out of the photo. Hope I'm like that someday.

  • No matter how many times you've seen it, the Grand Canyon is always breathtaking. It's hard to comprehend how such a relentless process taking place over such an unimaginable length of time results in such a vast and starkly beautiful place. Or something. It's early, words fail me.

  • The observation points at the Grand Canyon are like a photography equipment manufacturer's convention and trade show. I've never seen so many different types of cameras on one place.

  • Why do people make videos of the Grand Canyon? Are they expecting it to move or something? Are they hoping to catch some exciting action footage of the geological erosion? Puzzling.

  • My five year old Pentium III notebook with 128MB may still be OK for roadwork and demos, but it ain't up to the task of digital photo processing. There would be lots more modem melting huge page downloads here if my computer wasn't so slow. I could do better with the latest off-the-shelf disposable unit from Best Buy or someplace. Say, where's the next big town...

Anyway, here are some photos, including the obligatory Grand Canyon scenes that have been photographed 247 million times. Of course, mine are special.
