.The stores closed at 7 p.m. Monday, after workers were notified just hours before that they were losing their jobs.

Luna said she believes Walmart is closing the Pico Rivera store because its employees have been very active in protesting for higher pay. Workers there led one of the first Black Friday protests back in 2012.

A union-backed group is trying to block Walmart from closing stores it charges are being shut due to worker protests for higher wages.

Wal-Mart has gotten itself in trouble for similar actions. In June 2014, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that Wal-Mart had violated labor laws when it closed a store in Quebec. The employees in that location had voted to join a union. That made it the first unionized store in North America just before the store was closed.

Why don't they just say you get your job back when we reopen. I like to think the Department of Labor will investigate.

The company says it plans to reopen the stores and that employees are welcome to apply for positions at other stores. In the meantime, it will provide workers with résumé-building services, interview coaching, and two months of severance pay.
