The Return of Martin Guerre

Ashe gets his walking papers. Did he fall on a plate of sausages like a ravenous Ostrogoth in a Warsaw train station while the gleeful press snapped pictures? Yes. Did he represent the US in Poland while it teetered on the brink of a return to authoritarian rule? Yes. Did he have much to say about it? No. Why? Well, there's that non-working missile defense shield that HAS TO BE THERE TO PROTECT US FROM THE ROOSKIES! C'mon home, Victor. The reins of the County Mayorship are waiting for you to take them up!

Charles Robert Bone seeks TNDP chair

Another name that has been mentioned for the Tennessee Democratic Party Chair is Charles Robert Bone. We are told that he is actively seeking the position and has contacted executive committee members.

According to sources, his letter says that he ran for State Rep. in Dist. 45 (Sumner Co.) in 1998 and from that experience learned the challenges that face candidates. He has worked in various campaigns throughout TN including serving as Harold Ford, Jr's Finance Chair in 2006. He served since March 2007 on President-elect Barack Obama's National Finance Committee. He wants to "broaden the Party's fundraising base, strengthening candidate recruitment, facilitate a unified message and communications plan, develop the Party's technology that would culminate in a concerted 95 county GOTV operation and making training available."

He is reaching out to party officials, and says he want to "continue the communications plan that Gray Sasser and Kim Sasser Hayden have by implementing regularly scheduled conference calls with the Executive Committee and county Chairs."

UPDATE: Kleinheider has a copy of the letter.

RELATED:

• Chip Forrester on seeking TNDP chair

• Chip Forrester says he has 33 of 37 votes needed

(Note: We are told that Forrester now has 38 votes committed.)

Bush's parting gift to the environment

Bush has approved a new EPA rule that allows mountain top removal mining operators to dump mining waste into nearby streams and valleys.

In classic Bush "Clear Skies," "Healthy Forests" up-is-down-speak, the administration says the new rule is good for the environment because it doesn't allow mining operations to violate state or federal water quality laws, a provision mining companies wanted removed.

So the Bush standard of good environmental stewardship is not allowing industries to exempt themselves from existing environmental laws. Seems we've set the bar pretty low.

Next up in the Bush Going Out of Business Sale: a rule that would roll back emission control regulations and allow construction of new coal-fired power plants next to national parks.

RELATED: A local example of industry getting it's way, with our own local version of "up-is-down speak."

Cherrie's buyout deal blows up

More "he said, she said" details spill over on to the front page of the business section.

The article quotes a former business partner who was heading up the management group looking to take over the operation as saying Cherrie's owner Ingrid Gee "has apparently walked away and left minority owners, banks, creditors and employees hanging in the lurch and she's starting a new venture using cafe resources."

Gee says it's former business partner Joe Dickey's fault for not raising promised financing. In the article, Dickey says "From the beginning, she was having financial trouble. She was given several opportunities (to get funding) and basically refused."

Previously: Cherrie's Internet Cafe gone sour

UPDATE: Metro Pulse has more. (And apparently Joe Tarr is back!)

This first Friday we're going to the dogs

Okay, on Friday at 5:30 the Victor Ashe Dog Park Christmas Carol Chorale members will gather at the edge of Market Square by the garage to begin their (gulp) first holiday singing adventure. Karma as you can see by the picture has an adorable new red sweater dress with a Burberry skirt for the occasion. After we get the lay of the land, we will probably sing a song or two under some streetlight near or in Market Square to get warmed up, then we will meander over to the Mast store where we had the audacity to request an inside spot. The managers at Mast are actually excited about the dogs coming with us. Whether or not they like our singing remains to be seen. This is a serious gig for us (it is also our first and maybe our last) so we will try to be professional, except for that one part where we plan on all of us baying arf! arf! arf! instead of fa la la during "We wish you a Merry Xmas".
So walk outside and look to the west.

The crescent of the moon points to the Sun which is below the horizon. The bright object below and to the right is Jupiter. The brighter object to the left of Jupiter is Venus, which is also in crescent and the crescent of Venus alos points to the Sun. It's like... physics.

Anyway, I just checked Jupiter with my binocs and I could easily see the moons. I know you're jealous, so go outside and look West.

A school district had to cut back on supplies to save money. One teacher's budget would not cover the cost of making copies for tests, so he sold ads on them. This was in California, not Tennessee. It's rough all over.

TN Attorney General: Red light cameras constitutional

The Tennessee Attorney General has issued an opinion stating that red light camera citations do not violate the constitution, but they must be reviewed by a sworn law enforcement officer.

Regarding equal protection, the opinion cites case law and concludes that driving is not a right and therefore drivers are not a protected class.

Regarding the right to privacy, the opinion cites a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that there is a "lesser expectation of privacy while operating a motor vehicle than in other venues."

(By way of ACK)

Identify this bird?

I found this image on another website with a request for help in identification. I usually am pretty good at identifying birds but am stuck somewhere with no field guides. Helpful info: this bird flocks with house sparrows and acts like a house sparrow. Not-so-helpful lack of info: this bird was sighted somewhere in the lower 48 or Canada but I have no further knowledge of where.

My personal guess is that this is some sort of dark-phase or mutant house sparrow, but don't have a lot of confidence in my guess.

Dog number 4 dies at Happy Tails

It's enough to make you sick really. Three broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a suspicion of heat prostration. Every dog owner in Knoxville should be outraged. I can't believe this place is still open. I can't imagine who would continue to bring their dogs there.

The family's veterinarian, Dr. Denise Frazier, said the preliminary results of a necropsy performed at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Hospital indicate the beagle showed signs of heat exhaustion. But more alarming, she said, were broken ribs of both sides of the animal's body, as well as a punctured liver, which resulted in internal hemorrhaging."
