It would be nice see something good or pleasant in the news that originates in Tennessee

Did Tennessee elect anyone that isn't mean or angry?

I watched the video, I don't get what upset her.

A senior staffer for a Republican congressman scolded President Obama's daughters for dressing like "they deserve a spot at a bar" and told them to "try showing a little class" in a Facebook post that has since gone viral, drawing her heavy criticism and prompting calls for her dismissal.

GOP staffer calls for more 'class' from Obama daughters

I take very little that CNN says at face value too, but Elizabeth Lauten is a woman.

An unholy trinity

The unholy trinity of the Internet, monetized conservative media and gerrymandered state and federal legislative districts has created a nation of political cliques. As in high school social cliques, the like-minded self-segregate and create a feedback loop of peer pressure and one-upsmanship. Each member of the group takes whatever the last member said or did and refines and amplifies it. Inside the peer group, each new amplified iteration of whatever meme has gained popularity is eagerly accepted and lauded. Outside the peer group, these things are seen as ridiculous and in many cases egregiously hateful and antisocial.

It is only when a member of the peer group accidentally aims an overamplified meme at an external audience that they are shocked by the sudden interaction with reality as it exists outside the group. Often the buildup of unchallenged antisocial behavior has been so gradual and so consistently rewarded by the peer group that the perpetrator has almost no idea how utterly outrageous and awful their behavior has become.

In the adolescent school setting, this is how bullying and even sexual abuse and assault end up happening. Peer group members so distort their moral sensibilities that they don't even realize how unmoored they have become.

In current political discourse, the same happens, with perceptions of reality lost to fictional narratives cynically created by monetized political media, and readily accepted by willing members of the peer group.

Lauten's disgraceful remarks were never meant for a general audience, and she likely had no idea just how inappropriate they were when she wrote them. Within her peer group it has become normal and expected to regard the Obamas with contempt and disrespect. The starting point is to hate them first, then look for reasons why. Extending that to the Obamas' children is only a small step further.

And yes, liberals do it too, just not nearly as well. Failure to successfully monetize liberal media probably has a lot to do with it.

Lauten seems to miss the

Lauten seems to miss the difference b/w being the spokesperson for a US Congressman or a producer for Rush Limbaugh - the latter being more lucrative I'm sure, though she killed any chance by apologizing. Ann Coulter would never apologize. She really f*cked up any shot at catty mean girl stardom with that prayerful apology nonsense. Sheesh, amateur.

Factchecker's picture

There's no equivalence. The

There's no equivalence. The right warns the left to steer clear from personal issues, especially when they're indirectly related to the subject politician, and the left pretty much does. Of course some noise from both ends of the spectrum always exists. But for the left, these things rarely extend beyond the far extreme. The mainstream right, OTOH, seems perfectly comfortable with these kinds of political tactics in its playbook. This incident goes hand-in-hand with the socialist/birther crap and the Obama in witch doctor garb posters. It is of course racist, as well.

This is also no different from the way Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton were treated, both model children. Yet, when the Bush twins hit the party rails, hardly a peep was heard from the left. Their behavior was so bad, someone needed to speak up.

There are endless other examples.

Note that one of the bottom photos is said to be a spoof, but does it matter which?

Somebody's picture

See.

This is what I mean by the left not being as good at it. Nonetheless, I find it interesting that you think deflecting by sharing (even if way after the fact) admittedly forged but embarrassing photos of Bush's daughters is an ok thing to do. Hint: it's not.

Saying "there may possibly have been bad stuff about the Bush girls, but at least WE had the decency not to go after them" is one thing, but adding "...see? Here are some examples! Some are even forged!" is no more excusable than what was done by this congressional aide. You thought, though, that because this is a 'liberal' board and thus within the realm of your peer group that it's ok. Hint: it is not.

Hildegard's picture

I am just grateful the

I am just grateful the internet wasn't around when I was photographed doing crazy party shit as a young girl. I never trashed the Bush girls; they were being young and stupid, like any interesting, liberated young person.

Factchecker's picture

I thought you might see it that way

Just saw that on Facebook. How is this "Gorilla Pig" person on the same level as a congressional aide? I have no idea who they are, but I would bet they're not on the same level in the Dem party as the mainstream GOPers who do this over no bad behavior whatsoever from daughters of Democratic presidents, and that they do not have anywhere close to the same size megaphone as Limbaugh, et. al.

Do you think "Gorilla Pig" is equivalent to Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly, FoxFriends, et.al. (the list of GOP heavy hitters is nearly endless)?

And again, how is the behavior of the Obama daughters equivalent to that of the Bush twins?

See, you've proved that there's a false equivalence. Sorry you're hypersensitive about it.

Somebody's picture

You missed it.

I have no idea who "gorilla pig" is, and I don't care. My point was not about whoever that is, but about the fact that you thought it appropriate to share that imagery and commentary here. Your "false equivalency" issue is a red herring. I don't have any idea what the Bush girls did or didn't do, and I don't care. The line of decency that shouldn't be crossed is the act of bringing presidential progeny up for criticism in the first place. It matters not who was more ill behaved (if ill behaved at all). The kids didn't ask to be in the public eye, and should be off limits.

The Right has a poor record respecting that boundary, true enough. That doesn't justify bringing Republican progeny up now. I'm not hypersensitive at all, but it does irritate me when people on the Left undermine their credibility in criticizing the Right by committing the exact same transgression themselves, and then obtusively act like they can't see what they're 've done. It's like listening to the first sibling in the back seat complain about the second sibling starting a slap fight, only after the first sibling has just finished it by beating the crap out of the second sibling. All credibility is gone at that point, and even though the kid who started it has a bad habit of provoking things, at this point nobody deserves a stop at the ice cream store.

Factchecker's picture

Nope, politics is not bean bag

I, for one, have been appalled at higher-ups in the GOP using considerable bandwidth to shame daughters of Democratic presidents, among other political dirty tricks that go virtually unchallenged and seem to achieve their intended effect. That's my perspective, anyway. As such, I am glad that some brave mole somewhere, in this case "gorilla pig," is pretty futilely but nonetheless screaming from somewhere that the GOP are a bunch of hypocrites.

I guess we differ on our methods of retribution. You seem to prefer to preach purity and expect that we can pull that off and it will win over. I, however, don't think that is working so well and I'm tired of my party being used as a political punching bag, unwilling or unable to do anything about it. I think we should fight back defensively.

The Bush daughters: I agree with Hilde that the internet can play hell on mostly normal "youthful indiscretions." But damn, those young adults were in the public eye. Didn't anyone explain that stuff to them? Who should have been responsible for doing that? Weren't they old enough to understand the consequences of their actions? Yet I'm sure most of the public does not hold those activities against them. I'm glad they grew out of their excess partying ways. I did too, fortunately for me. And like most of us, I'll bet they've landed on their feet. Good for them, bless their hearts. (That last phrase is snark, and roughly means I think they'll get through life pretty damn okay.)

Somebody's picture

Voter apathy

Your solution is precisely why that big middle section of voters just stays home and ignores politics and government. When Democrats decide that the only way to compete with Republican lying, cheating and dirty tricks is to counter them with more lying, cheating and dirty tricks, those middle ground folks lose faith and lose interest because they correctly see both sides as pretty much the same thing.

Cowering and capitulating to the right-wing barrage of nonsense won't win elections and won't solve problems for average Americans. Ramping up a left-wing barrage of nonsense won't achieve those things either. If Democrats unapologetically and honestly propose reality-based alternatives, support among those middle-ground voters can be tapped, elections won and serious governance achieved.

Then again, maybe responding to lies and dirty tricks with more lies and dirty tricks could eventually win some elections, but really, what would be the point?

Factchecker's picture

I thought voters were staying

I thought voters were staying home because Democratic candidates couldn't stand up for the de facto head of the party--their own president, and articulate why Democratic legislation like the ACA and modest regulations are good for the country and why Democrats are better suited to solving the country's problems. Also on what the party plans to do about wage stagnation/inequality, job growth, infrastructure, getting the government working for them, and tax code simplification. That sort of thing. I thought I'd noticed that Democrats were instead hiding from Obama and running on a GOP-lite agenda that included forcing a vote to ram through the KXL tar sand pipeline.

All this time I had no idea it was actually because some suspected Democrat on Facebook was chewing gum in class when the teacher clearly warned him the party would suffer huge losses if anyone did.

Democratic messagers, repeat after me:

"This is an outrage! It's one thing for Republican attack dogs to lie and demean an American President, but it is beyond vile for them to attack these beautiful children, who frankly have been a wonderful example to all."

This woman should lose her job immediately. Call for it! Every Democrat should be on message.

GOP Staffer Who Attacked

GOP Staffer Who Attacked Obama Girls Was Arrested During Her Own "Awful Teen Years" | The Smoking Gun

Lauten, pictured above, was arrested in December 2000 for misdemeanor larceny, according to court records. Lauten, then 17, was collared for stealing from a Belk department store in her North Carolina hometown.

Because Lauten was a first-time offender, her case was handled via the District Court’s deferred prosecution program, which resulted in the charge’s eventual dismissal after the future scold stayed out of trouble for a prescribed period.

Since Lauten was just another teenager caught shoplifting at the mall, it appears unlikely that she was publicly pilloried for her lack of class, nor were her parents criticized as poor role models.

Hildegard's picture

For a minute I was like, wait

For a minute I was like, wait a minute, she was 17? That's juvenile, those records are protected...but a lawyer friend from NC tells me for criminal proceedings you're an adult at 16.

Well, she was being a catty bitch when she posted that and it was unprofessional and all, but the backlash is getting ridiculous. She lost her job, people should just get over it. She doesn't deserve to have her life ruined, ffs.

That said, I don't understand why communications directors would have social media pages where they publish opinions, period, snark or non-snark. I thought the whole point of PR was just being a smiling, policy-spinning robot for your boss or client's agenda.

fischbobber's picture

Communications director

Well, her job title was being billed as a communications director and I think she was probably under the impression that people were going to agree with her and she would be viewed as some sort of rising star. It was one of those risk/reward moments we, as parents, try to teach on athletic fields and academic competitions, that clearly aren't making it down to the consumer level.

I think the backlash is to be expected, if it doesn't go away it will become ridiculous. There is supposedly a picture circulating now of Ms. Lauten in an intoxicated state making a sexual innuendo. My guess would be that the backlash will last as long as there is ammunition for the people coming back at her. She would know better than I what she has in her closet. I would say this is her Linda Tripp moment in the limelight.

Dahlia's picture

Exactly.

As you said, she was a communications director for a Congressman. She's not some waitress at Shoneys who spouted off on Facebook. She should be called out for the extreme hypocrite that she is.

If she puts that stuff on Facebook for anyone to say, then what kind of garbage is she dishing out to the constituents in Finchers district?

So no, Somebody, I'm not going to sit back and let this woman say nasty, ugly things about our president and his children, especially, when she's done some pretty bad stuff in her past.

Somebody's picture

Huh?

Nobody said to sit back and take it, certainly not me.

It is how you respond that matters. Responding to vile pettiness with more vile pettiness doesn't make the world a better place, and it undermines the responder's credibility in making any kind of criticism at all.

Much to your relief, that's the last I will say on this. Anyone who doesn't get this is willfully trying not to get it.

fischbobber's picture

Edit:

(link...)

I don't know if it's fair to consider this sexual innuendo. I think it's overstating the case, but I wasn't there at the time. Given the present circumstances, I think embarrassing and humbling might be a better description of this picture, assuming it's Lauten as it's reported to be.

Dahlia's picture

Ha! Social media certainly

Ha! Social media certainly has a way of calling people out. Amazing the things people forget.

Somebody's picture

Well, she was being a catty

Well, she was being a catty bitch when she posted that and it was unprofessional and all, but the backlash is getting ridiculous. She lost her job, people should just get over it. She doesn't deserve to have her life ruined, ffs.

Exactly. Why is this so hard to understand?

Dahlia's picture

I can't believe she's

Only 31 years old and making such a prudish remark. And then to have said all that after being arrested for stealing in her teens? Haha, you can't make this stuff up.
