Thanks to the hail storm, we're having to get a new roof.

Our roofer has suggested this stuff: (link...) as a way to cut down on our energy usage. It is called Polaralum, and it replaces the roofing felt.

We're told by the roofer's own experience, in the heat of the summer this product knocks the temps inside the attic down by a good 10 degrees.

Any experience out there with this stuff?

Thanks in advance !

No answers, more questions.

Does the roofer have a manufacturer's certificate statement?
Is it Energy Star tested and approved?
Is it included in energy savings tax credits?

Does the shingles manufacturer say it is acceptable, e.g. your shingle warranty will be good?

What is the cost and what will be the return on your investment in energy savings?

Will you be using lighter colored roofing shingles?

I haven't heard anything this

I haven't heard anything this product, but I've heard people complain about the radiant barrier that you apply to the underside of the rafters (the more foil-like material). Some claim it is bad for the shingles, that it "cooks" them.

I'd definitely check with the shingle manufacturer. Even if this thermal barrier would not harm the shingles (I'm thinking it wouldn't), you may still void the warranty.
