I needed an eraser, so I went to my neighborhood Dollar General Store to buy one. They had them for $1, but in super-bright colors and made in China. OK, then ...

So I went to Jerry's Artarama, and, as expected, they had them too -- but made in Germany, for $1.09. I had to ask myself, if Germany can make and export erasers, why can't the US?

Isn't most everything in the Dollar General Store (Dollar Store, Family Dollar Store, etc.) made in China?

It would be nice if we could make erasers in the US, but I'm very happy to be able to get one locally that is made in Germany (not made in China).

Actually, no.

Dollar General carries both Anchor Hocking and Sterilite products, many of which are still made in the US, as well as US-made food and cleaning products. You just have to look for them.

i'm always surprised to find 'made in usa' products at dollar general. i even found a plastic watering can made in canada, of all places.

being a tennessee-based company, you'd think they'd make a campaign of 'made in tennessee' items, but i guess the bottom line is price.

maybe that's something the chambers of commerce could get on ... what's made in tennessee and where to buy 'em.

Staedtler Mars is not the best example of "why can't Amurica do it". They are a very old company that usually sets the mark in most things they make. I have several of those erasers right in front of me, and several of their scales (made in Japan). I wouldn't have any other brand.

what does made in the usa mean?

when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's I remember clothes labels saying things like, "made in Greensboro, NC", etc. Does "made in the usa" mean it's made in one of the 50 states? or maybe that it's made in the Mariana Islands or Guam or who knows where.

So much of what people buy

So much of what people buy today is a piece of crap, as Neil Young so eloquently points out.
