That's just pathetic.
That's just pathetic.
I will say this was filmed in
(in reply to Rachel)
I will say this was filmed in front of the Aquarium, so I do wonder how many of those people are tourists.
*
(in reply to cwg)
Yes, but don't you think the reporter would have asked each of these people if they are residents of TN first?
No, not really.
(in reply to CE Petro)
No, not really.
Out of state would explain
(in reply to cwg)
Out of state would explain the Sonny Perdue answer, but it too was wrong.
It’s the aquarium part that actually bugs me. I’d have felt better if the questions were asked at a ball park or the movies.
Not Surprising
It's a Tennessee version of the Tonight Show's 'Jay Walking' segments and it goes a long way toward explaining just how we managed to get into this mess.
I noticed some still
I noticed some still remembered Bredesen.
I wonder how many people outside of Knoxville know the governor is a Haslam.
Ron Ramsey?
Right?
+1 You Win!
(in reply to smalc)
+1 You Win!
Haslam
Some of them may be tourists and from out of state. Some of the Tennesseans interviewed are likely not registered voters which, sadly, is a lot of people and people who, for political purposes, don't matter.
For those who are registered, Haslam seems to be doing just fine:

Haven't seen a poll since this legislative session, but statewide I doubt it would have much impact one way or the other.
Also worth noting that the piece was edited to be funny, not insightful.
So is Honey Boo-boo
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
It doesn't make it any less sad.
Approx 33% of adults voted in
Approx 33% of adults voted in the 2010 election.
November 2, 2010 voter turnout statistics
In response to average guy
No, it doesn't make it any less heartbreaking. And scary. And it doesn't bode well for the future.
One of the thing that bothers me is this: we keep spending more and more money to make it easier and easier to vote. Early voting cost a lot of money. I don't see much evidence that it has done anything beyond rearranging voting patterns among those that already vote. And give incumbents a bigger advantage. Peaking, including mailing, calls etc. for 2 1/2 weeks of early voting AND then election day make a campaign a lot more difficult and expensive. Incumbents have an easier time raising money. Therefore the early voting tends to favor incumbents.
Not suggesting we get rid of it, just noting the issue.
I'd also love to see us get rid of voter registration. In my home state, Minnesota, all you have to do is show up with a drivers license and you can vote. We'd never have that here out of fear of voter fraud. I guess Minnesota starts with the idea that the people of the state and not inclined to be cheats. And what data base is more secure. I'd say DMV/Department of Safety.
Easier to vote? Not hardly.
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
Easier to vote? Not hardly. Republicans on both the state and national level have been working very hard to make it much much harder to vote. And they're succeeding.
And it doesn't bode well for
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
A few youthful faces in that piece, but the problem also appears to be the “now”.
And yes, anything but encouragement to vote is discouragement. People certainly don’t need more of that.
I’ve wondered if taxes were all labeled like gas if people would pay more attention. Or if instead of withholdings, people actually got a tax “bill” at the end of the year with itemization of what’s supposed to be going where.
If people actually knew what their dollars were going to, they could grade for themselves, and vote accordingly. As it stands, I think more people go to the polls thinking about their beliefs than they do their money. Which is odd, because I thought the idea of this country was freedom of beliefs. It’s the society as a whole aspects of government that has the costs. But instead of people taking the time to check and see if they’re getting a good deal, demagoguery wins out.
Not sure early voting does anything to alter that trend.
You may not have noticed it
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
You may not have noticed it but not every voter in Tennessee had a need for a drivers license until ALEC brought back the poll tax.
Stupid video.
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
It's not clear if these people are TN residents, and even if they are whether they are registered active voters.
Do a poll of people who actually vote in local (not just the national) elections, and you'll get quite a different set of results.
Maybe I'll do my own video at Rossini or something.
Disagree
At least in Tennessee it is easier to vote now than it has been before. You have days and days and days to do it and easy to reach locations and virtually no waiting.
you may be right about some places, but I don't think you are right about Tennessee.
Voter ID? Hello?
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
Voter ID? Hello?
Are you kidding?
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
More & more voting places have closed all over Knox County forcing citizens to drive further. Also, the voting machines are obtuse at best so I would suspect some voters don't know who they voted for.
At one point.
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
If you mean it was easier when McKay was running things because he opened up early voting, then yes.
If you mean now, compared to when McKay was running things and before voter ID, uh... hell no.
I am the governor of Tennessee!
Oh, sorry. I thought we were playing "Spartacus".
Voter ID
Good point. That was a step back. But mostly we have improved.
But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
... how did you enjoy the theater?
Sic Semper Voter Registratus....
I am not a fan of the voter ID. But while that is a negative motor/voter registration, early voting, giving local results an impact on Election Commissions...those are all good things.
And the Supreme Court could
(in reply to Mike Cohen)
And the Supreme Court could very well strike down Motor Voter this term.
