We noticed the other day that Springbrook Pool was really, REALLY crowded in the late afternoon/early evening on a weekday.
It got us to wondering how many other public pools there are in the area.
Blount Co. has two (Springbrook and John Sevier). I was surprised to learn that Knoxville has only two (Ed Cothren and Inskip). They are both operated by the City. Knox County does not operate any public pools.
That works out to .47 municipal pools per 100,000 population in Knox County v. 1.65 per 100,000 population in Blount County. So Blount County has 3.5 times as many pools per capita.
There are several other community and privately operated pools in both Knox and Blount County, but it's hard to tell how many and which ones are open to the general public.
I thought of Concord, but the Mrs. just checked and they closed it and filled it in a while back. Guess that's why they weren't answering the phone. I spent practically every summer day of my youth in the Buck Giffin pool on Island Home, but it is long gone and forgotten. I believe both of those were operated by the city, too.
So anyway, what other outdoor public pools are there in the area where anyone can go cool off without a membership or belonging to a community pool association?

The karns lions club
The Karns Lions Club Community Pool is open to the public.
After calling the Westside
After calling the Westside YMCA, it appears the public can visit their pool for an admission fee of $7.00.
The Oak Ridge Pool is very
The Oak Ridge Pool is very nice, large, and cheap. It has a sloped entrance at one end, an "island", and (fairly)high dives. It's supposedly spring fed, so the water is nice and cool.
Lenoir City has a nearly new pool with a "splash pad" adjacent.
Loudon has public pool. I haven't been there in 30ish years, but it's still open.

Considering the dense population in a pool....wouldn't one of our beautiful lakes be a better option? I will buy you floaties.......or better yet, I will loan you my Coleman camping mattress (pump and batteries included)...go to Fontana and wet a worm. Might be a cleaner cesspool. ::))
i grew up swimming in lakes
i grew up swimming in lakes and oceans. i truly miss them. the wonderful old pool at the downtown Y isn't really an adequate substitute, although it does keep me in shape. several years ago, i spent a week in stockholm, where many of the waterways within city limits are somehow suitable for swimming.
