Re: other Memos
Don't send out any other dumb memos, i.e. boycotting all Mike Chase restuarants, not telling people health clinic operating in Five Points near housing project.
The building probably is
The building probably is underappraised, which is standard practice for most buildings, and it has undergone renovation and retrofitting since the appraisal. Some (or maybe all) of the renovation has taken place with public money, however. The city kicked in a $50K facade grant, and maybe some more, as well.
If it's worth $400,000 (which I still can't write with a straight face), the property assessor needs to take another look at it, since it's being taxed at the (much) lower rate. It would help to actually collect the taxes, too. There were no outstanding taxes on this property, but the landlord's HQ on Magnolia is seriously delinquent.
I've driven by the place every day for more than a week now, and see very little activity. The county is claiming the mantle of Dr. Hardy, and the memo to county commission in response to our story says they are carrying on his legacy by bringing health care to the most disadvantaged. I concede that it's convenient to those who live closeby (particularly for residents of Walter P), but they were already within an easy bus ride to the main health department, and it's far less convenient for the working poor out in East Knox County, many of whom have no health insurance coverage at all.
A commercial building that's only appraised at $66,800?
Is it really crummy, or is it really under-appraised?
Hey, Les, why don't we just call each other assholes and get it over with. - Somebody on the old Southknoxbubba.net (if that was you, claim your quote and win net.fame!)
In a memo to commissioners (they don't talk to us)
They claim the building is worth $400K.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Drive by and eyeball it. It really IS on MLK, btw.

Speaking of rents and county revenue, anyone know the specifics of this arrangement with a private church and a local county school?
(link...)
Sunday mornings services are at 10:30am in Brickey – McCloud Elementary School
students also meet for a mid-week worship
Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Could that arrangement have
Could that arrangement have been a result of the Nine Counties One Vision process? I know that one of the higher-ranked goals was to better utilize our public facilities - particular our school buildings - after hours. I'll try to track down an "outcome" on the 9c1v website (assuming it's still active).

Best I could come up with:
(link...)
Might not have a thing to do with it, but might also have been the genesis (no pun intended!).
"Speaking of rents and
"Speaking of rents and county revenue, anyone know the specifics of this arrangement with a private church and a local county school?"
Nothing new, the school system has been rented its facilities to church groups for years; sometimes renting parts of the same building to different groups on Sunday mornings.
Tithings of comfort and joy
Nothing new, ...
hey, I'm not out to put the ACLU on retainer or present any graven image of wrongdoing... just thought it might make for some interesting Bean counting.
In light of this expenditure of rent for this satellite clinic, one might hope to discover ledger balance with similar formulas of equity to offset our County budget.
I hear they're thinking I need to pay more for somebody's trash disposal too, and I already pay two governments for this service!! One of them sends a truck down my street once a week, would drawing up a service district allow me to opt out of this increase?

Another case of "throwing a bone," perhaps? No...surely not! Perhaps the NAACP threatened Ragsdale as well?
