I sent this letter a few days ago and wanted to make it public:
David B. Rausch
KPD Headquarters
800 Howard Baker Jr. Ave
Knoxville, TN 37915
Dear Chief Rausch,
On the evening of Thursday, July 24, I became ill while covering a candidate forum at Lawson McGhee Library.
I’ve been having violent episodes of vertigo this summer (probably caused by allergies), and knew I needed to get home before it really hit me, so I left the meeting, wobbled out to the parking lot and got in my car. I made it to the corner of Church and Henley, where the car hiccupped and died. I called AAA, and they put me on hold for 10 minutes. It was another 57 minutes until a guy with a gas can showed up.
Meanwhile, I’m vomiting and sweating and slumped over the wheel, blocking the right-hand turn lane. People are pulling up behind me and honking (as if I’m having a big bunch of fun sitting there vomiting onto my floorboard), and it was hot as hell.
After a few minutes, a cruiser pulled up behind me, and out stepped KPD Officer Michael Dabbelt. He stayed with me the whole time (after I convinced him I didn’t need an ambulance and would be OK if I could just get home), and when my car didn’t start even after the AAA guy poured in two gallons of gas, Officer Dabbelt told me he had a tow truck on standby and said I was too sick to drive anyhow.
He was right.
The towtruck got there in no time. The driver loaded up my car, put me in the cab and gave me a big cup to throw up in. I was home within another 10 minutes and feeling OK before midnight (this stuff makes you violently ill, but passes pretty quickly).
What Officer Dabbelt did for me probably wasn’t a real big deal in the work life of a police officer, but I cannot imagine what would have happened without his help. I don’t want to think about it. He was courteous, efficient and very kind. I was too sick to be embarrassed about puking all over the place, but I really appreciated his help. Protect and serve was exactly what he did, so I think it’s important to thank him, and to let you know what a great job he did and how much I appreciate it.
Anyhow, thank you so much.
And thank you, Michael Dabbelt.
I owe you a solid.

Great story.
Hope you're OK.
Yes, hope you are okay.
Yes, hope you are okay. Vertigo is not fun and it sounds like you had a really bad episode.
Comment and a question....
(in reply to bizgrrl)
Great to hear a story about police that does not involve a beat down or a military invasion force or killer drones...
Would Madeline be willing to put "To Protect and Serve" back on the police cruisers?
Not to hijack Bean's or the
Not to hijack Bean's or the Chief's apparently well deserved giving and receiving of warm fuzzies but, if another person had an equally innocent experience that went into the negative rather than the positive, (there are a lot of different employees from different places with different attitudes, it certainly could happen if it hasn't already) would you then ask our Mayor to repaint the cars with "To Abuse and Neglect"?
I am glad Betty's experience reinforces what I know of the Chief and most of the officers I have casually interacted with over the years. But I could tell you stories that would not justify a positive repainting of the cars. Those stories all predate this Chief but, I do not know if the officers are still around. My opinion is that it would be best to continue to avoid the rush to judgement. Either way.
"To Protect and Serve"
Perhaps Tim Burchett could have that painted on the back of McIntyre's car.
Went to an otolaryngologist
Went to an otolaryngologist today, and he told me I am most likely working on a case of Meniere's Disease (which confirms my self-diagnosis).
It has already cost me 40% of my hearing in my left ear, which he says is nerve damage and cannot be restored. He believes he can save what I've got, but I'm going to need a hearing aid for that ear in order to function normally.
That's going to take some getting used to.
I'm also going to have an MRI and a battery of allergy tests to rule out other options (like a brain tumor).
He says there are things he can do to relieve the vertigo attacks, none of which sound very appealing. But you go what you gotta do. Meanwhile, I've lost about 14 lbs since this ordeal started, so there's that.
Betty
(in reply to Bbeanster)
When I was reading your story I was wondering if it was Meniers. My husband has that and also has some hearing loss. He's only had a couple of episodes, though, so it's not been too bad for him. He cut back his sodium intake and that seemed to help a lot, cut back on the fluid retention. It's unreal the amount of sodium in our foods.
My best to you and please keep us posted on how you're doing.
Ugh
(in reply to Bbeanster)
That really sucks, Betty. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
Dang, Beanster!

Is it time for me to head to your place with some homemade chicken soup? I owe you, you know!
Meniere's is a tough one.
Meniere's is a tough one. Good luck in getting things straightened out, Betty. I've got two friends who are having a really hard time with it right now.

That was in jest mind you. I am glad you had a good experience with KPD and was only providing satire. However, it is a shame that a good fluffy story of good cops come across as slightly condescending to the "rest of us" who have had nothing but negative experiences. Indeed, a few bad apples give the crop a bad name, however in context of protection and serving the bar should be raised to the standard you wrote of.

Best to you, Betty, for a good prognosis and the speediest recovery.
Lucky for you
I'm glad Betty had a good experience. If she were a he, not to mention if she were a person of color, she would likely have been arrested for public intoxication and driving while impaired. If she was smart and kept her mouth shut maybe she wouldn't have been beaten and charged with resisting arrest.

Yo, Mr. Tibbs.
Who told you I'm white?
Certainly not my Puerto Rican mama.
Like white on rice
Betty, i've seen your photo a thousand times. No matter what your heritage, you look white as rice.
I recently did a DNA test on ancestry ,com. I found out I had african american ancestry in what i only thought was Irish -american roots. Can i start claiming that I've been discriminated against all my life?
Admit it. What you looked like, how you spoke and probably what kind of car you were driving probably had more to do with how you were treated. i guessing you weren't driving a '95 corolla?
