Disdain for Wal-mart is so rampant, I just don't understand why Target, or some darn body, hasn't elected to steal their business by staying open until midnight.

Interesting. In the military commissary system the baggers are not paid. There are signs that say they are 'tip only' wage earners or something like that. There is quite a waiting list to get an opportunity to bag the groceries and take them to the customer's car. It has always been a good way for teens and / or retirees to supplement their income. It wasn't unusual for a bagger to knock down a couple hundred bucks a day.
