Martin Daniel is running in the Republican primary against incumbent Steve Hall for 18th District Tennessee House. Apparently, Hall sent out a mailer attacking Daniel for donating to U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, a Democrat.

In response, Daniel said "sometimes, campaign contributions go beyond politics," noting that his son has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and that Rep. Cohen had helped by sponsoring the MD Care Act which provides funding in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy. Mr. Daniel's full statement after the break...

Daniel Responds to Hall Attack
Sometimes, Campaign Contributions Go Beyond Politics

Knoxville, TN- Martin Daniel, Republican candidate for Knoxville’s 18th District, explains a small 2013 campaign contribution made to Tennessee Ninth District Congressman Steve Cohen.

"Sometimes, campaign contributions go beyond politics. Mr. Cohen's political views are vastly different from mine. My contribution to Congressman Cohen had nothing to do with politics," said Martin. "It had to do with my son and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy."

Martin further said, "My wife and I are in a fight against a cruel killer of boys, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Our son, Matthew, has Duchenne. We founded a non-profit corporation by which we raise and disburse funds for the purpose of finding a cure or treatment of Duchenne. The federal Muscular Dystrophy Care Act of 2001("MD Care Act") provides a plan for conducting and supporting research and education on muscular dystrophy. Over the past few years, I have gone to Washington D.C. as a volunteer, and I have met with several members of Congress concerning muscular dystrophy issues, including Tennessee Ninth District representative Cohen. Last year, at our request, Mr. Cohen, along with many others, compassionately sponsored a bi-partisan bill reauthorizing the MD Care Act. Thereafter, Mr. Cohen called and asked for a contribution to his campaign, and, as a small expression of thanks in helping us in our fight, I made a contribution to him."

Martin also noted that over the past few years, he has made campaign contributions to numerous Republicans, including Congressman John Duncan, Tennessee Senators Mark Norris, Jim Tracy, and Mike Bell, along with Tennessee Representatives Mark Pody and Ryan Haynes.

Steve Hall should be ashamed of himself

Duchenne's is a horrible disease and has caused heartbreak for so many families. It it one of the saddest things to witness as a young boy loses his mobility, as his muscles weaken, he ends up in a wheel chair, and gradually dies. These kids are very much aware of what is happening to them.

Glad to see Martin Daniel's response and proud of Rep. Cohen for doing something about this insidious disease. If I were Steve Hall, I would apologize for that mailer, that's pretty low down.

Look before you leap.

Look before you leap.

Somebody with Hall should've put 2 and 2 together. Hall has had his own health issues, he should know better.

Bbeanster's picture

Hey, Hall doesn't have to

Hey, Hall doesn't have to worry.
Former state legislators get to keep their state-subsidized health insurance for life, if they've served long enough to vest, which I think is only 4 years.

Miranda Jones's picture

Mr Daniels

Martin Daniels you still gave to an Liberal DEMOCART congressman. There was plenty of Republicans that would help with your son's needs. I have many health issues and I have an child with Downs syndrome and I struggle every day with money to pay for medication .I don't have money to start an foundation I am not wealthy like you . Mr. Hall had plenty of reason to send that mailer out . I will not ever vote for you or anybody that is supporting you . You bashed Steve Hall and his family I am sick of people like you . You have so much hate for Steve Hall. You have never said what you are going to do for district 18 just bash Steve Hall shame on you . Cheers. Why would you want to leave your child and wife with your son with him in such bad health and go to Nashville for 5 months if the life span of your son is so short . Is it because you want more insurance!!!!!!! Cheers Try to be poor and struggle with money for doctor bills and medication.

Average Guy's picture

I like racing DEMOCARTS

But never raced a liberal one.

Do they go faster?

An aside; if anyone has a time machine button that can make Aug 7th arrive faster, please hit it.

Nelle's picture

Silly DEMOCARTS

Miranda, I'm sorry to hear that your family is struggling with medical bills. If Tennessee's leaders had opted to expand Medicaid, as the DEMOCARTS wanted them to, you'd probably have an easier time of things.

Cheers.

Mr.Daniels

Steve Hall did the right thing in sending that mailer all you do is press release on anything Steve Hall does . It is sad about your son ,however plenty of republicans would have helped you but you gave to the biggest LIBERAL DEMOCRAT IN THE U.S.. This is wrong if you run for office you can't ride the fence. It is either Democrat or Republican you are neither . You get angry when someone brings out what you do wrong. GET OVER IT!!!!! You are an hot head and you have lied to the district 18.I guess that is what rich lawyers do .

No I am not going anywhere but to the press. CHEERS

Average Guy's picture

Funny,

you and "Miranda" both have a propensity for the inappropriate use of "CHEERS".

But yes, you should go to the press.

Bbeanster's picture

Hall and Campfield are both

Hall and Campfield are both going to lose. They'll be able to go into business together, I reckon.

Mr. Daniels

I wish Steve Hall had mailed the information about you sooner. You need to understand when you run for an political office whom ever you support and what ever you say will be used against you . Look how you are twisting the truth about Lake Shore why don't you really read the bill. It states nothing about the park.
I about so tired of you bring up about hospital being build. I have many friends that ride the bus and have to use CAC to go to doctor they want an hospital on Middle Brook pike. So get over it.
Mr. Martin you have never expressed your concerns about district 18 or what you are going to change. That is why my wife and I are not voting for you . I personally do not know Steve Hall ,however I have researched his voting recorded in Nashville and when he was on city council and I like what I found. Mr. Daniel I don't know what your real motive to get elected to the state House it is not for the good of the 18th district. To give money to an U.S. Democrat shows me you will vote at what ever benefits your needs not the people of the 18th district. You are wealthy and don't care about wasteful spending or you wouldn't have spend over 100 thousand of your own money for this election and those billboards with your face and We Can Do Better is hideous.

patsy santos's picture

Mr. Daniel

Martin Daniel I received your letter dated July 30, 2014, I am ashamed of you for using your son and his disease for your political gain. I am confused that you want my vote for State Representative for the 18th District but you clearly stated in your letter that this position "will not be a job for me" . I want someone that will work to represent me and my families interest, but clearly you are out for yourself and promoting your own agenda. Isn't it true that the only reason that you want this job is to tell TDOT what to do?

Bbeanster's picture

Oh, good grief. What next,

Oh, good grief.

What next, somebody's going to shoot at Steve and Rob McNutt?

Wait... that already happened.

Steve Hall apparently has an

Steve Hall apparently has an active and creepy social media operation. Don't have a dog in that hunt, but some the comments wouldn't be helping to get my vote.

fischbobber's picture

Hall's base

Hall's base is somewhat creepy. It is also organized and actively votes. You would be amazed what you can do with a well-organized 20% of the voting block. It's not against the law to be prejudiced, homophobic, ignorant or crazy. If you can organize these four demographics, and have no doubt, Hall has, you can win a lot of elections.

To beat a Steve Hall, you not only have to show him for what he is, you have to get the people who see that to get out and vote. The former is easier than the latter. The is a backlash effect in this district.

Bbeanster's picture

Also it helps to primary

Also it helps to primary him.

Especially in a year when Stacey's getting primaried.

I actually kinda like Steve and think he represented his constituency pretty well on City Council. He may remember that I told him at a Council of West Knox County Homeowners that sponsoring the bill to lift the scenic highway designation from Middlebrook Highway for Tennova without talking to the surrounding neighborhood groups would cause him trouble. And that was before we learned that he'd taken a big donation from Tennova.

He pretty much blew me off. Evidently he got to thinking he was bulletproof. And why not? Stacey kept getting away with 10X the crap Steve ever pulled, and he got his running buddy McNutt on the election commission. Why worry??

On the other hand, something tells me that a guy in the billboard business isn't *really* all that crazy about billboard-free scenic highways.

Dan Lang's picture

Bbeanster

I must have missed that election . When did this happen? I thought I live in America not the country I grew up in . If you voted against someone they shot and killed you. Was you the one that shot Steve Hall and Rob McNutt??

kayla hobrook's picture

Bbeanster

I went online and looked about the donation from Tennova and it was 500dollars and it was given to all except Stacey Campfield and Gloria Johnson. This had nothing to do about the hospital being built . TENNOVA and many doctors give donation and get nothing in return . What do you think lobbyist do in Nashville and Washington D.C do across the nation . When they give money sometimes they get what they want and sometimes not. I know my mom wants the hospital build on middle brook pk. She is 87yrs old and she had 3 strokes so not all people in west hills don't want the hospital. I heard and weigles is going to expand in west hills and you don't want it either. The hospital isn't going to be built anyway.

I 4 people that was going to vote for you ,however my neighbor called me an informed me you have lied to all district 18 about Lake Shore Park. I want you to apologize to district 18 in an letter or press release because the Bill SB1243 is nothing to do with the park itself it is the property where the LAKE SHORE MENTAL INSTUTE was operated prior to closure. You and Victor Ashe whom I have not respect for and he had taken my sister's land in eminent domain while he was mayor and built Victor Ashe park. I have hated him ever since my sister had an stroke 1 yr later.
I can't believe so many people already voted for you. Shame on them it is bad enough you gave money to D- Steve Cohen and Lied and distorted the truth about State Rep. Steve Hall and you paid all the D-papers to print a lie. Many of my friends that live in Dean Hill doesn't like this . I guess million-airs and lying lawyers get anything they want.

Rachel's picture

the Bill SB1243 is nothing to

the Bill SB1243 is nothing to do with the park itself it is the property where the LAKE SHORE MENTAL INSTUTE was operated prior to closure.

You do understand that the City and the State had an agreement that when Lakeshore the institution was closed, the land it was on would become part of Lakeshore Park (which itself if located on what used to be part of the grounds of the Institute)? And that Hall tried to keep that from happening?

Rachel's picture

Holy cow. Steve Hall

Holy cow. Steve Hall supporters are nuts.

I'm with Bean; I kinda like Steve personally. I pretty much disagreed with 90% of his votes on Council, but whenever I talked with him he was unfailingly pleasant and took the time to listen to me. That's behavior some of his supporters would do well to emulate.

fischbobber's picture

Likable

If you think Hall is pleasant and likable you would likely be blown away by Campfield. My wife is apolitical and hasn't voted in the 17 years we've been married. The one time she considered seriously going to the polls was when this really nice guy came by the house and talked to her for twenty minutes. He agreed with everything she said and told her he was representing people like her. You guessed it; Stacey. What makes Hall and Campfield so dangerous is that they are so pleasant and likable.

It's why they both scare me.

Knoxgal's picture

Steve Hall is pleasant

Steve Hall is pleasant to talk to. Politically, he's a disaster, but I don't trust anyone who owns a billboard company no matter what he says about abstaining on related issues. Daniel's goal is to go to Nashville to get restrictions on billboards relaxed. It's a damn shame neither party put up a decent candidate in this race, but as the lesser of two evils I would hold my nose and vote for Hall. Hall has also promised he will introduce legislation to restore the scenic highway designation on Middlebrook and add on an amendment which would allow Tennova to build above the 35 ft height restriction.

Martin Daniel is an idiot. He recently spoke out that he thinks it is totally appropriate for ISIS to recruit on TN campuses.

Daniel is not a Republican. He is a RINO!
