Per the KNS earlier this morning, Seventh District school board candidate Andrew Graybeal has announced he will not run.
The deadline for filing qualifying petitions closed last week.
Therefore teacher-candidate Patti Bounds has won the seat by default.
Heartiest congratulations to my son's former first grade teacher, from her former Room Mom.
Patti, your retirement from the classroom will be Brickey-McCloud Elementary's loss, but the school system's gain.

Home visits
Tamara -- Was it you who told me about Patti's home visits to each member of her class before the school year starts? What a wonderful idea (and a lot of work). I've never met Patti, but was friends with her grandmother, the late Bernice Branson. If Patti is half as tough as Bernice, she'll be a great member of the school board.
*
(in reply to Sandra Clark)
Yes, Sandra, I mentioned that earlier.
Patti always scheduled home visits over the summer and she also hosted a swim party and cook-out at her home for each year's incoming class, inviting parents and siblings of her new students, too.
I also mentioned that she kept the class photo of her every year's class hanging in her classroom, which display very nearly filled a wall.
(I did neglect to acknowledge in my initial blog post that it is yet possible for someone to launch a write-in campaign against her, but such a person might find himself/herself subject to a public flogging, eh?!)
That is good news.
Congratulations to Ms. Bounds.
Thanks for running Patti! I

Anybody understand why Brian's got a bee in his bonnet?
He could congratulate Patti Bounds, but I couldn't?
(Read his last two blogs.)
Really Mr Hornback
(in reply to Tamara Shepherd)
In the event that the "Moderator" doesn't approve my comment I'll post it here. Since he did put a link up to this site after all so here goes Brian:
I come to this site for news, but is this news? In your previous article you stated “this leaves Patti Lou Bounds unopposed. Congratulations Mrs. Bounds and the Seventh District.” Does this mean you are any more credible then the people you write about. By your own standards you should retract your congratulatory statement, apologize for misleading the public, and state that the race is still up for grabs. It sounds like you have a grudge to pick. I can turn to FaceBook for better gossip.
If in fact you are congratulating Mrs. Bounds and the 7th District are you not implying that she won or is this a game of semantics? Brian do you have a horse in the race? Are you someone's cheerleader? After all you didn't tag anyone, but general on your congratulatory District 7 article, but in the article about Mrs Shepherd you tagged all the candidates, Knox County Schools, Knox County, TN, Sixth District, and Politics. Maybe a better catch phrase could be: "A Biased Media Everyone Knows"
I just checked.

(in reply to JimCrawford1)
It's actually pretty damn funny to see side by side.
I would point out
(in reply to reform4)
There is a difference in being unopposed and "being the School Board Member by default" as Tamara identified. Being unopposed still indicates that a write in candidate with enough write in votes could still force a run off. Being the school board member by default is finality.
Maybe he'd have nice things
Maybe he'd have nice things to say about you if you'd buy an ad.

(in reply to Bbeanster)
I considered it, actually, but his tagline is problematic for me. That "the media that EVERYONE knows," in the upper right?
Since "media" is plural, that should read "the medium that EVERYONE knows."
Or if he maybe has other blogs with so little traffic as to be undetectable on the net, it could read "the media that EVERYONE know."
You know, school board candidate, subject-verb agreement...I couldn't get past it.
Congratulations Mrs Bounds
(in reply to Tamara Shepherd)
It appears to be a win for our teachers , children ,and our citizens. Thanks for the insights Tamara.
If I could buy a $50 ad and keep him from saying nasty things

Sounds like a business plan to me.

Will not get her much exposure. In fact, there isn't an ad spot to meet that budget limit
Damn, I'm not charging
(in reply to Brian Hornback)
Damn, I'm not charging enough. Can I hire you to sell ads for KnoxViews?
Oh, wait. We're toxic kryptonite for businesses in these parts. I guess I'm OK with that.

Doesn't operate that way. Apparently, you are ASSuming that my website operates the way that entities that employ you as a contract writer operates.

Can I link to KnoxViews in one of his ads, to document that I do know that?
BOE candidate Terry Hill on CTV
(in reply to Tamara Shepherd)
I record the Friday night CTV political shows and watch them later....Well, I fast forward them later. Unless the DTV show has information, there is not much of interest here.It is mostly warmed over right wing pabulum. However, last night's Steve Hall show had BOE District 6 candidate Terry Hill as a guest. I stopped and watched the DVR...It was interesting...Mr Hall asked Mrs Hill her opinion on Common Core. She buzzed around it in generalities but finally perched on these branches: (1) It is state mandated and we have very little choice. (2)We need more rigor to be competitive (3)Change is hard and evaluations are never easy, and (my favorite) (4)Common Core was partially implemented to help military families who travel from state to state.
A phone caller asked if she would have voted for the McIntyre contract extension.Mrs Hill took to the air again and repeated the question. She flapped and wondered why no one suggested a 60/90/120 day delay of the vote to see how McIntyre was doing in quelling the revolt. Then she repeated the question and said, "Well no." It seemed a very tepid approval of the Kim Severance delay- the- vote plan , which Severance herself never actually put forward. Severance promised her constituents a delay vote "at the worst", then voted the full 1 year extension. That vote sealed her fate on BOE departure. That seemed a strange branch on which a reform bird might land, since almost 90 days have in fact already already passed since the vote.Instead of reform,we have the reality of locally mandated SAT 10 tests on our K-1-2 for data alone,we have the MarkTaylor BOE / TVAAS inquisition ,we have the inexplicable McMillan false ethics violation fiasco, and we have a tsunami of revulsion against the Common Core Cabal...Mrs Hill, did you inadvertently have your political / BOE DVR on 6 month delay? Take some time.Catch up on the current episodes and then we will talk.
the media
(in reply to Tamara Shepherd)
Is singular as in one BRIANHORNBACK.COM that EVERYONE that means EVERYONE knows the name.
It is easy when you think about it, Tamara. I left a message that if you email me your events that I would post them. That is free and within your budget. I haven't received anything from you. Why you want to call me out knoxviews and not take up on free exposure is confusing. But it is your campaign, if picking fights with internet bloggers helps you then have it.
*
(in reply to Brian Hornback)
Oh, pshaw, Brian. I'm not picking any fight with you; I'm giggling at you, is all.
I did acknowledge above that (theoretically) someone could still beat Patti in a write-off campaign, but if you can point to an instance where that's ever before happened in this county, I'll eat my hat.
And while you don't know a blasted thing about my budget since January 31, I'll offer that I intend to manage it just like I do the one applying to my household, which means I'll be trying to get good value for every dollar.
Now shoo that bee out of your bonnet and settle in for a comfy evening with a glass of cheap plonk and a dictionary.
Actually, it did happen in a City Council race
(in reply to Tamara Shepherd)
That did happen in Knox County in a Knoxville City Council race. In 1989 write-in Gary Underwood defeated incumbent Hoyle McNeil for the 1st District Council seat.

(in reply to Bill Lyons)
Uh, thanks Bill.
Fortunately for me, I issued that challenge to Brian, not you, so I do believe I'll adjust my hat and amble away from this conversation...

What????!!!
Wow, thanks for posting that Bill. I didn't know about that. (And THAT'S why you have a pavilion named after you! Kidding.)
Gotta keep earning those pavilion naming rights
(in reply to mdonila)
Thanks Mike. The sad thing is that I remember that situation better than I have any reason to. I was teaching an urban politics class at UT at the time and the students were fascinated with the whole thing. A write-in defeating an incumbent, let alone a candidate for an open seat, was and is very unusual. Of course, there were some complicating factors.
A city council primary is a
A city council primary is a very different thing than a countywide primary. And Tamara specified 'county.'
Bill
I set this up to hit a grand slam and you beat me to it. But that's alright. I have 31 years of active politics and can correct any carpetbagger. Just as you can too.
Victor Ashe orchestrated that Gary Underwood take down on Hoyle McNeal. Hoyle didn't see it coming
I agree
(in reply to Brian Hornback)
I agree Brian. It was a complete surprise. The element of surprise is reduced now that write-ins have to register beforehand and folks need to know how to at least get close to spelling the candidate's name correctly.
So Tamara
Eat that hat quickly and I will still be an active citizen journalist and well you are a public official by state and court standards now.
You can't just swat folks away
I remember
When my political mentor Loy Smith (RIP) decided not to turn in his petition and my friend Jimmy Kyle Davis was unopposed. A guy, I think Tom Wilson ran as a write in. He had signs on a wooden stake cause back then that's all we used. On top of the stake was a disposable tin pie pan nailed on top of the stake with printed stickers for voters to stick on the ballots. I don't remember if that was legal back then. Self Serve stickers! It was funny. He wasn't successful, by the way

(in reply to Brian Hornback)
You're right, Brian, that I should concede the existence of that prior write-in campaign that succeeded in removing an incumbent officeholder.
But that was then and this is now.
So I'm waiting for you to provide evidence that someone, somewhere has the audacity and the acumen to successfully launch and prevail in a write-in campaign against this sweet, soft-spoken grandmother-teacher of decades to preclude her from taking her seat.
Produce this dastardly foe.
Until then, I offer you half a chewed-up hat!

To her commitments. If she won't do it now, she won't do it if she were elected to the board. I am not thinking that's gonna happen though

Brian. I don't have any hat. I acknowledged that someone had previously ousted an incumbent with a write-in campaign.
Now. Who might be willing and able to do that to Patti Bounds?
Because I am not thinking that's gonna happen.
Go be a pain in the ass on
Go be a pain in the ass on your own blog, Brian.
You know, the blog where you have a weird post trashing trashing all the candidates for a judgeship in another county – except for one: the one whose ad is running right next to the weird post.
Bean
It is so good to know that you view my website so often that you have it all memorized. If your memory were decent you would know that the Ethics Advisory Opinion of 1998 was because of the actions of a candidate in a Knox Co primary in 98, the same candidate that I managed from the primary to the General in 98.
Either the rule of law is followed or not, had those other four candidates followed the rule of law, they wouldn't be written about.
So keep coming back to brianhornback.com memorize my advertisers, cause when you get your deposits for your contract writings, you gotta spend it somewhere

When will they learn?
(in reply to Brian Hornback)
Brian, as a "citizen journalist" you are subject to the same levels of criticism. You put up the link to this thread. You made yourself news by asserting your opinion. I would have never have come to this site if you did not link it to your article. You want my name and phone number before allowing comments to be "moderated". You seem quick to point the finger at others, but the more you talk the more credibility you lose. The question and username seems rhetorical, when will they learn? On the same day, before you wrote your article, Mrs. Shepherd already acknowledged that that a write in candidate could be a possibility. So it appears you have a personal grudge and are using your website to bully people.
When will they learn?
March 3, 2014 at 7:46 am
Sam, Unopposed is not the same as a default winner. Tamara loves to correct others grammar and spelling. You ask her what time it is, she tells you how to build a clock. The point was Tamara Shepherd is very precise, except of course when she isn’t. I think this post was about her superior attitude. For such an authoritarian supposed expert, Tamara makes a lot of mistakes. A lot of people gave her the benefit of the doubt in this election, but that attitude is still an issue.

Everyone makes mistakes. That’s the basis of learning and you learn fast after you’ve made one. The articles that I read here and on on other sites stated: “this paves the ways for Mrs. Bounds” and “congratulations Mrs. Bounds and the 7th District.” I would not call it a mistake because everyone was saying the same thing, you just made it a point to make a play on the semantics of the grammer. We can agree to disagree, but to your credit or discredit, if your going to make news, make it news worthy. I assume you are Mr. Hornback because you requested my name and number, and I will continue read and comment on your site, which I check daily. I wish all the candidates the best of luck and success, but I also want as you stated, someone who is precise and an expert.
JimCrawford1 or Really_Mr_Hornback or Sam S
Whatever identity you use, I don't recall linking to this story. Although may have, but only after Tamara asked a question about me. Your definition of bullying is not the same as mine. Because I have continually been beat upon by anonymous posters here for years. Only after emailing Randy with this thread did my account get activated. I feel if I am going to get beat up and talked about, I should be able to respond. I know that's probably a novel idea for you and others like you. Whoever you are.

It occurs to me that this thread no longer has anything to do with the original topic. I think the news is about Patti.
That you and I can agree on.

It seems to have gotten off track with Bean referring to a blog post from BrianHornback.Com concerning Blount Co judicial candidates.
I think....
This thread got off track over nit picking a title for a thread on a blog.....
somebody won a primary and has no one running against her in the fall election.
the chances of a write in opponent are slim.
Somehow this got to be a much bigger issue than the actual story....

Since it is now after midnight, if Brian can make just one more post on this thread, he will have succeeded in keeping up his tantrum for one full week.
One full week, that is, since I made this concession in above comments on Thursday, February 27 at 1:00 p.m.--
I'd like to tell you I'm on the edge of my seat to see if he will persevere for so long...but I think I'll just go to bed, instead.
