We Got Less Than Two Inches
Just got back from a little walk on Beaver Ridge at Cheneworth Gap. We got about 1 1/2 inches with ice on the trees. An icy rain began to fall about half way through our walk and we heard a very large tree snap and fall somewhere west of us on the ridge.
We visited the 'fort' (a cluster of big rocks) where I played as a kid.
Visit us at:
The Home
We have about six inches here in Halls...
at least here at our house.

Cold outside, hot inside
Really, Kenny? I stuck a ruler in Dennis's coat pocket when he went out to walk the pups and he came back in saying the backyard got about 2 1/2 inches. Maybe dense tree cover on the ridge meant a little less accumulation there?
Trudge on around the corner when you get bored this aft. We just put some con queso with habanero peppers on the stove and thought we might crack open some premixed margaritas my cousin brought over.
Petros for supper, with chili enough to share, and three Redbox movies we're content to return late :-)
Epic fail
What makes it all the more comical is that the forecasts got more and more far-fetched the closer the storm got. 3-5", then 3-7", then 4-9", then 6-12", then 15"!
Idiots. I guess common sense goes out the window if it doesn't agree with the magic computer model.
From a statistical standpoint, why would anyone ever forecast more than 5" for Knox County? If you just stuck to that rule, regardless of what the computer says, you might miss on the downside, what, once every seven or eight years?
That would be a better track record than we see now.
Brian A.
I'd rather be cycling.
As long as I've been in East
As long as I've been in East Tennessee, the ingredients for a significant snowfall are almost always the combination of 1) a low pressure system that tracks from Texas, runs south of us, then through the Carolinas, and 2) a push of cold air that slides down from the northwest at the same time. Just about every time those ingredients coincide, Knoxville is within a short distance of the temperature line that demarks precipitation that is snow and precipitation that is not snow.
All that is to say that when the system sets up, the potential is there for a significant storm. Where that temperature line happens is the determining factor. Predicting precisely where that will be cannot be an easy task. Meteorologists deal in probabilities and risk assessment. Considering all the variables, they were quite close to accurate in their predictions for this storm. Had the temperature differential spent just a little more time lingering a few miles south of where it did, we would've had deep snow. As it is, most of Knoxville got what was predicted for Seymour. That's pretty close, when you think about it.
I think you guys are being
I think you guys are being too hard on the weather guys. They said all along it would depend on where the transition line ended up. That turned out to be pretty much right over Knoxville, so I can how forecasting could have been difficult.
That said, I do think some of the weather guys put too much drama into discussing impending snowfall. Ch. 10 is worse than ch. 6 about that.
BTW, we have about 3 inches on the ground. More fell but has melted or was washed away by the rain.
It's been snowing here since
It's been snowing here since 3 PM today.
Tired of it already. Would like to go for a walk without worrying about falling.

Mast might stock 'em. Might be a little late for this year, but these are a good item to have.

Funny, I measured 1 1/2
Funny, I measured 1 1/2 inches of snow in my back yard, Tamara is an eight minute walk away and got 2 1/2. A Flickr contact in Powell says he measured six inches.
Right now the temp here is 33° and the sun has already revealed a bit of pavement on my driveway.
