Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and National Park Service Director Mary Bomar are starting a listening tour with the first stop at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park maintenance area this Tuesday. The maintenance area is about 1/2 mile behind the Park headquarters, but you can park at the Sugarlands Visitor center and enjoy a nice evening stroll with the additional hours of daylight. They will be listening from 6-8pm. Wouldn't it be impressive if hundreds turned out on a work day to a remote location in order to express support for the Park? Details from the Tennessean.

Update: The NPS press release indicates the meeting will occur at the W.L. Mills Conference Center in Gatlinburg, which makes a whole lot more sense.

visit to Smoky Mtns

I don't live up there any more but I'll contact friends and family to urge them to be there... I have so many happy memories of going to those mountains, hiking, camping etc. We found the smartest dog in the world that some nut had abandoned at Abrams Falls. We named her Smoky

A few miles past the falls

A few miles past the falls down Abrams creek is an area called Happy Valley. There's a good chance your dog may have wandered up from there. Several residential homes and farms are located in the valley, and although it is possible that he was lost when you found him, there's a strong chance he wasn't abandoned.

dog

This happened almost 40 years ago and the dog had no flesh whatsoever on her little bones. She was almost starved to death. An ugly pathetic little thing who was smart enough to communicate with her people.... i.e. standing at the door with her leash in her mouth when she wanted to go outside. I figure she was abandoned because she was frightened out of her wits of boots and heavy shoes. This was during the hippie era when high school boys wore combat or harness boots. I had to make my boys stop wearing them in the house. She was a real doozy though...
