Michael Silence has the press release:

One of three manufacturing facilities in the Knoxville area, Riverview makes Sea Ray boats and will wind down production during the first quarter of the year. To better utilize Brunswick's overall boat making capacity, production at Riverview will be moved to nearby plants in Knoxville and Vonore, Tenn., which will remain in operation. In addition, production of certain models will be transferred to Brunswick's Palm Coast manufacturing facility in Florida, and a Brunswick plant in Reynosa, Mexico.

Ouch

This is not good.

Once these plants get mothballed, they do not come back.

The skill set to assemble fiberglas boats is limited and not easily transferred to other lines or work.

Most fiberglas assembly boat plants have reduced production significantly.

A sign of the times, I'm afraid. Boats are discretionary purchases.

I also see that VW December sales were down 15%. (Not nearly as bad as US autos, but still bad.) Makes me wonder about the outlook for manufacturing in that sector.

I'd rather be cycling.

Also heard the official

Also heard the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Chattanooga VW site has been postponed.

They have already started construction so it was only a formality, or so they say.
