Gregg Allman, dead at 69...

Very sad news. Contrary to the Rolling Stone headline, the Allman Brothers Band was not a "Southern rock" band. They were a sophisticated and highly accomplished blues, jazz, rock and jam band from the South. RIP Gregg. Go be with Duane and Berry and Butch and kick some ass.

The photo above was taken by me in Oct. 2009 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. AC scored us photog credentials for the Mrs.'s birthday. That was the last time we saw them live. It was awesome.

We saw them at the World's Fair Park a long time ago. Their performance of Dreams with Jack Pearson sitting in was one of the great live performances I've experienced.

The first time I saw them was at the Coliseum when they opened for B.J. Thomas sometime around 1970. It was the original lineup with Duane and Berry and the rest. That was pretty awesome, too.

I remember seeing them at the Nashville Speedway shortly after Duane passed on. They were troopers.

Live at Filmore East remains, to me anyway, the greatest live performance ever recorded.

P.S. it just occurred to me that the first and last time I saw the Allman Bros. live was at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

... that WFP show

I achieved a trance like state during a couple of songs. It was the best of the half dozen Gregg/Brothers shows I saw. RIP.

Here are a couple of photos the Mrs. took at that 2009 concert. This is Gregg. She captured him better than I did.

During this era, Allman also

During this era, Allman also was something of a grassroots political activist, helping put a little-known Jimmy Carter into the White House with an endless run of fundraising concerts. (When Macon's Mercer University bestowed an honorary doctorate upon Allman in May 2016, it was Carter who presented it.)

A man after our hearts in more ways than one.

In the 90s we we're traveling out west and just happened to be in Colorado when the Allman Brothers were performing at Red Rocks. We tried but couldn't get in. We did encounter Dickie Betts at the Denver airport as we were leaving, but the Mr. wouldn't let me go and speak with him.

So sorry to hear this. I'm pleased that both my kids like the Allman Bros, too.

(Ditto that Filmore East was the best live recording ever. Ditto, too, that they weren't any "Southern Rock" band. That would be Lynyrd Skynyrd--whom I never cared for.)

The Late, Great Gregg Allman

Gregg & the Brothers are/were (as evidenced by the number of comments) very near & dear to the Neals as well as me. I, as well as so many others, have a profound appreciation of his contributions to music.

Early in life, Gregg was a wannabe dentist! Luckily he turned to music as a career.

It's ironic that according to my research, the Bros. had only one Billboard top ten hit (Ramblin' Man) and Gregg had only 2 entries in the top 100, & Midnight Rider only reached number 19. Apparently they weren't interested in commercialism.

Earlier this year, Gregg recorded a new album entitled "Southern Blood" which should be released soon. One place you can check it out is HERE.

If anyone hears about funeral arrangements, memorials, tributes, or other similar things please post the info here.
