Mountain kids grew up with parents stressing it’s not enough to do the right thing. It must be done in the right way. That’s why it’s baffling the way Donald Trump is handling his job after seven weeks.

President Trump had four years in the White House to effect change; he had another four years to think about a second term. So, why is he now thrashing around like a bull on speed, breaking things with no attention to the cleanup?

Reducing the size and scope of the federal government is absolutely the right thing.

Doing it the wrong way, however, looks like this:

  • Executive Orders – more efficient than gaining Congressional approval, even when his party controls both legislative bodies. But most are unconstitutional.
  • “Long live the king” posted on White House social media with a mock-up cover of a fake TIME Magazine, with Trump wearing a crown. Not cool.
  • Firing people without thought about them personally or what they do. Not smart.

How does it save money to fire the tax collectors?

My heart breaks for the career professionals in all federal departments – indiscriminately fired without regard to personal performance or job necessity. This is the wrong way to run a country.
