The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University just posted a summary of guidelines for public officials on dealing ethically with the press.
The talking points were developed at a recent workshop sponsored by the center. It's a brief but interesting read that some may find quite timely with respect to Knox County gubmint.

Guideline #5
5. Do not misuse your elected position as a stepping stone to gain political capital. The citizens elected you and have given you their trust. You should not waste their money buying support for the next step up the ladder in your political quest for a more powerful position. Do not leave the citizens hopelessly in debt when you move on.
Thank you Larry for the interesting link…. good reading….keep up the great work.
YES YES YES
That's the key issue and key guideline voters should use. The "stepping stone" issue is the cause of most of our problems in politics.
(I'm glad to say that I have ZERO interest in politics after doing my 2/6 years with Commission...)
That's also kind of my problem with the proposal to reduce size of Commission- why would anyone spend $40k-$50K to run for the part-time position, other than to use it as a stepping stone?
