Pants suit

The "tort reformers" will probably cite the $54 million lawsuit over a lost pair of pants as proof that the system needs fixing. On the contrary, the verdict proves that the system works just fine.

Despite some news coverage of the legal system, it does work 99%+ of the time. Not to say it can't be better, but I wouldn't trade it for that in any other country.

I think it's great the judge made the guy pay the cleaners' court costs, and he'd better pay the legal fees too. That's a huge part of tort reform, to reimburse the defendants for all their expenses. But there's no way to reimburse them for the time lost or the stress and headaches, especially when the plaintiff is a big-time lawyer with money and power - even those completely in the right about a suit can have their lives entirely disrupted, and there's nothing that can be done about it. Except to put in place a filtering process that recognizes frivolous lawsuits and tosses them before they even reach the first couple of stages.

Most likely impossible, but it's still something to shoot for.
