This is from my Aunt Gene, formerlly of Wasilla AK, who knows Palin quite well. This is from a family email, so I don't know if she wants to be quoted by media. Let me know if you want to quote her and I'll ask.
To those who want to know my feelings on Sarah Palin:
I have been getting a number of emails asking me if I know Sarah Palin and what I think about her so I'll write one opinion and send it to all.
I know her quite well. When she was on the city council in Wasilla I had a major run in with her over bar closing times. I was testifiying on behalf of the Alaska Christian Conference and the Valley Christian Conference. I was president of both. There was a push to close the bars at 2 am instead of 5 am. She responded to my testamony that she didn't see any relationship between her Christian faith and the time the bars closed. She said she was a Sunday School teacher at the Assembly of God Church. In essence, she felt it was out of line for me to testify on behalf of the church groups I represented. She had not yet integrated her faith - there was the sacred and the secular and one should not mess with the other. She won. I lost. Wasilla also lost - because when Anchorage bars were closing at 2 am, their drunks were driving to Wasilla (40 miles) and then going home about the time Wasilla workers were headed to Anchorage. After Anchorage started closing its bars at 2 am, there was a significant traffic accident spike of these drunks driving back and forth. to drink in Wasilla until 5 am.
Wasilla also lost since the police chief said 5 am bar closings had always caused a lot of domestic violence when drunken parents came home just as the family was getting up to go to school and work. That night Sarah supported the bar owners, not those who believed a 2 am closing would cut back on traffic accidents which caused injuries, deaths and damage. She voted in favor of the bar owners and didn't understand or care that closing them earlier could avoid early morning abuse of spouses and kids. So I lost a lot of respect for her then that still lingers.
My problem with her now is that she has been a city council person of a city of 5000 plus its mayor. She went from there to governor and she has been governor for less than two years. I shudder to think what would happen if McCain was elected and dropped dead after a month in office. One has to keep that in mind with McCain because of his age. And, Wasilla is not like just any other city in the US and Alaska is not like just any of the other state in the Lower 48. If she was VP for four years she might grow into a broader understanding of what this nation is really like - and if she found out, she might want to pack up and head back for Alaska.
She has grown since my encounter with her and she has pushed for reform in Alaska politics where the whole Republican Party seems to have been tainted with corruption. For that I applaud her. She ought to have rejected the request to be VP knowing she was too inexperienced - far less experienced in dealing with the whole country than Obama - and kept up her good work of cleaning up Alaskan Republican politics.
She is a conservative so that wing of the Republican Party will love her.
She is a graduate of Wasilla High Scool, was runnerup in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest and has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Idaho in Moscow. She is married to Todd Palin, an Alaskan Native. They have five kids, have been married 20 years, the last child just born has Downs Syndrome and Todd has worked on the North Slope of Alaska in the oil fields.
As a reformer, she has been embroiled in a controversy of her own and there is a special investigation being conducted right now - did she or did she not ask one of her underlings to see that her former brother-in-law got fired as a State Trooper. The jury is still out.
Right now the thought of her possibly being President scares the fear of Hurricane Gustav which is heading towards Crystal Beach right out of me.

Interesting. Although I
Interesting. Although I have to say I'm with her on this: there was the sacred and the secular and one should not mess with the other.
And yet now we have her pandering to the religious right
And we are swamped with headlines like this:
Evangelicals energized by McCain-Palin ticket
(link...)
You may agree with how she WAS, but I wonder if you will agree with how she IS on the sacred vs secular politics question.

Actually, Gene is sugarfatpie's relative and, guess what, it's true. Rather than have safe streets, she'd have rather let drunks make 80 mile round trips from Anchorage to her little town because she didn't want church versus state problems.
One of the weakest retorts ever. How many drunks drive 80 miles for a drink? Do they not have package stores in Alaska?
fatpie's post is a big stretch. Why you would applaud it shows how afraid you are of Sarah Barracuda.
Be afraid Butterfly, by very afraid.
I see...
No one is afraid of Saraldine Quaylin. She won't last another 2 weeks.
For someone who is not afraid you seem very worried.

Palin has diminished McCain's support among women.
Since your on a hair trigger #9 you should now be near suicidal about the latest Palin polls, which show her presence on the ticket has actually diminished support from disgruntled HIllary voters.

And regarding that Libel thing, maybe you could explain to us why you have to post "anonymously". Its pretty sad when a grown-up can't follow the rules of civil discourse.

You make an excellent point about the use of "Stalinist," but I wonder why I see Michael Moore, The Daily Kos and other left-wing blogs, as well as many Liberals use "Hitler" and other terms that should never be used except when referring to WWII?

an Angel gets his wings
Your new girlfriend took land from a developer by eminent domain in order to build a $15-million sports complex for which Wasilla still owes $7 million. The city attorney hired a private law firm to help him litigate the case, which has cost at least $250,000.
She failed to close a $125,000 deal for the land in 1998 and subsequently spent about $2 million to purchase it, with the potential for that amount to more than double as lawyers battle over the last entrails in the Alaska Supreme Court.
Certainly there are hints of Ragsdale in there, but she sounds even more like Victor Ashe, who, ironically, is in Poland on the more active front line of the new Cold War with Russia the GOP seems nostalgic for. Greatest talking point ever: Sarah Palin has foreign policy experience defending Alaska from Russian invasion!

Desperate?
I've been desperate for years to see power wrested away from the crooks and liars running the White House. I used to think Republicans had enough character to eventually get past the partisanship and recognize that torturing prisoners puts our own soldiers at greater risk, or that unsavory alliances with Saudi princes and embezzlers had lead Bush astray. I thought they would care that pallets of American cash were flown to Iraq and handed out like candy. I thought they would care that the CIA's best access to the Middle Eastern oil industry was sabotaged.
I was wrong. Republicans care about nothing but their tax rate. They love to lie and to mock those who worry themselves over truth and facts and the future. In short, they are a urine puddle this country must step over to retain its greatness.
I don't much care for Biden, but he is a distinctly lesser evil than Harry Reid and Neville Pelosi, and he is certainly a better man than 90% of the Republicans in the federal government.
The hypocrisy of Republicans has grown to the level of sociopathy. The country has been run by chickenhawks for eight years, and now you are picking on Biden for being a chickenhawk? You are a disease.
Your point about the Saudis
Your point about the Saudis is way off mark and sounds as conspiratorial as the Right with their black helicopters. Saudi Arabia presents the key to dealing with terrorism and any attempt to engage that nation should be seized to the full measure. There would have been no 9/11 were it not for the role of the Kingdom in Islam. Add in that it is basically the Saudis that are the main player in OPEC, could play the major role in dealing with Israel and the Palestinians, as well as a buttress against Iran, and one can see that getting the Kingdom to open would do wonders for the world, not to mention America.
The U.S. Constitution, it is what makes us free and makes us American. Let's treat it as such and with care.
Your point about the Saudis
Your point about the Saudis is way off mark
I wasn't making any point about the Saudis. I was making several points about Bush, all of which you ignored.
Elsewhere you promote Washington's remark about avoiding foreign entanglements, yet here you advocate full entanglement in Saudi affairs.
Thus you demonstrate the internal confusion and poor comprehension that underlies conservative philosophy and the failure of Republican policies. You serve as a convincing example of why Republicans can no longer be trusted with power.
Yeah Right. Sandra Clark
Yeah Right. Sandra Clark needs another writer of fiction, you need to apply but then again how do we know if this isn't already a Slopper Scripps employee

Hey, go with what you got . . .
So, let's see how this line of attack goes.
I guess "Gene" has concluded Palin's a flip-flopper . . . who has changed for the better, in the author's eyes (but certainly not for the better as far as the Left is concerned, but that won't keep them from trying to get some mileage out it)? Which begs the question: is it possible to legitimately change one's views on public policy?
Not only that, the purported socially conservative author is more comfortable with Obama as a candidate? (Gee, I wonder what his stance would be on forcing bars to close early?) And the author even considers him more qualified for his less than four years in "national office," all but 143 days of which has been spent running for President?
This gives anecdotal evidence a bad name.
no flip, just a flop
I guess "Gene" has concluded Palin's a flip-flopper . . .
No, that is not the conclusion, not at all. McCain is the flip-flopper.
Palin has been a fairly consistent spend-and-recruit Republican. Promise spending reduction, deliver revenue expansion instead, hope it works out in the wash. She will be another fat dose of cronyism to bloat the federal budget.
Someone is doing
Someone is doing research.
Is it true McCain only met her once before selecting her? That's quite odd, for such an important appointment. I think it was Paul Begala who joked about not going out on a date with someone who he has only met once.
Brian A.
I'd rather be cycling.
Whoa. That is indeed some research. Nice link.
Whoa. That is indeed some research. Nice link. Here it is again.

Highlights:
Sarah Palin has an Abramoff problem - a Pro-Palin illegal mailer was sent during her gubernatorial campaign on behalf of Palin by the RGA, the DC group that got money from Abramoff, Reed, etc.
She advocated AGAINST mine safety / pollution control
She has an ANTI-ENVIRONMENT RECORD and is on the wrong side of global warming and doesn't think polar bears should be listed as endangered because it interferes with her drilling plans.
She's against sex education - abstinence only.
She appears to oppose windfall taxes on oil companies at the national level but supported them to benefit her state and she wants to drill ANWR.
Believes Creationism should be taught in science classes
Don't believe the whispers that she supportive of the GLBT community. She's opposed to state health benefits for same-sex partners and only vetoed a resolution that would have ended state benefits because the Supreme Court had already declared it unconstitutional.
She's opposed to universal health care and stem cell research
No foreign policy experience? According to the folks at FOX think she has foreign policy experience because "Alaska is near Russia."
She doesn't know what the Vice President really does.
This choice is NOT helping McCain's polling numbers, especially with women.
McCain only met Sarah Palin ONCE and talked to her TWICE making this a purely cynical and desperate political appointment by HIS CAMPAIGN not by him! She's not really HIS VP choice.
She's deeply connected to the Bridge to Nowhere.
She stated that she would force her own daughter to have a rapist's child.
She has 3 houses
Terre pointed out that she's connected to VECO - the company at the heart of Ted Stevens' troubles. She also received an endorsement from Ted that has suddenly disappeared from her webpage.
She called candidate Clinton a whiner. Why does everyone in the McCain campaign think others are whiners?
She apparently hasn't taken a stand on most major political issues
Her selection has created a major rift among the Republicans, especially Romney & Pawlenty.
Past quotes by Rove make Palin's selection look like desperation.
Palin may have been scrubbing her own wikipedia page
Sarah Palin, Buchanite - Palin supported Pat Buchanan in 2000, a fact which may alienate certain Florida voters. Hat tip to misslotus
She was vetted too quickly and McCain only picked her the night before making the announcement.
She's still focused on Alaska not the fact the she would be Vice President for the whole nation.
She participated in a profane on-air attack againt the Alaskan State Senate President and giggled at the word b*tch..
Like Bush and McCain, she can't admit when she's wrong.
She's linked to the Dominionist movement and Joel's Army.
The United Steelworkers have already spoken out against her.
She was a bad mayor who left her town's economy in tatters.
She supported Obama's energy plan, but suddenly these references are disappearing.
Some of the PUMA's believe that John McCain is patronizing them.
Additionally, this choice eliminates the "He's not ready" attack on Obama.
This choice raises the issue of McCain's age (Is Palin ready to take over if he keels over).
It also raises the issue of McCain's past unfavorable statements against women.
Additionally, this choice reminds us that McCain is an adulterer and raises the spectre that he is just a dirty old man with wandering eyes.
Palin's husband is on BP's payroll creating a possible conflict of interest.
She made extremely poor use of Eminent Domain during her time as mayor.
She favors censoring library books (Alert your local librarian!)
Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young (both under investigation) campaigned for her in 2006.
She didn't support McCain in the primaries.
The top 2 ALASKAN newspapers question her fitness for the job.
She supports aerial hunting of wolves even though it was outlawed by Congress. She's using a loophole.. Hat tip to Scarce

Hey, Pie, now that we know
Hey, Pie, now that we know how your Aunt "Gene" thinks, what does your Uncle Mary say? Don't you mean "Jean?"
I love watching the Libs scrambling on this one. An attractive, smart, articulate conservative who happens to be a woman. The attacks will be vicious, no doubt. I can't imagine more vicious attacks that are coming unless a Republican President ever decided to nominate an attractive, smart, articulate conservative who happens to be black for the Supreme Court or something big.....Oh wait........
I don't know Pie or his Aunt
I don't know Pie or his Aunt Gene, but I know plenty of folks who don't spell their name the way society says it should be spelled, including a long dead woman in Arkansas who spelled her name Gene. Possibly from the name Eugenia.

Wow. You really think the fact that she is a woman wasn't part of McCain's calculation?
Please, be honest with yourself.
