UPDATE: Flynt issues a statement:
My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

Good riddance
Jerry Falwell is one of the most repugnant human beings to disgrace American politics in the last 30 years. If Jesus truly called him home then I'm proud not to call Christianity my religion.

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.
- William G. McAdoo
Thou shalt not speak ill of
Thou shalt not speak ill of the freshly dead.
Evidently there is such a commandment, although I've never found the stone on which is etched and I'm not sure how much time must pass before it becomes OK to get real about the record.
Couple of weeks ago, Wade Reynolds died. He was the cemetery operator who cheated hundreds of people (many of them poor country folks who saved money from disability or pension checks hoping to spare their loved ones the expense of burying them) out of cemetery plots -- He literally victimized widows and orphans.
I've been writing about Reynolds and his victims for two years, so I knew lots of people to call for an obituary story. Even though S. Clark chopped out a couple of quotes where people predicted that he'd very likely zipped on down a slick chute to hell, the story was not your typical obit
I wondered what the reaction would be, and sure enough, we got a whiny letter about how we should have shown more respect for his family who were said to have loved him.
This wasn't particularly persuasive to me, since his wife was a participant in the graveyard business (he'd put everything in her name because he was banned from owning a cemetery in Tennessee due to some prior unpleasantness), and she presumably benefitted financially from extracting money from the bereaved. I really don't subscribe to this "respect the dead" convention. Famous people make history, but we all live, we all die, and we all leave a legacy.
Those who are singing his praises really ought to look at Falwell's record. He was an established bigot who opposed civil rights for black people, both here and in South Africa. He opposed equality for women and supported oppression of gays. I won't miss him or Wade Reynolds.
Well I try not to be...
a hypocrite if I can help it...all I'll say about Falwell is that I thought he was a bigoted, lying, pompous ass in life and my opinion of him has not changed now that he is dead.

Jerry Falwell kicks the bucket
Yep, old Jerr, the Grand Wingnut Poobah, has kicked the bucket. I have the distinct impression that he realizes now that God is nonpartisan. I have a vision of old Jerr
shoveling coal for Satan's blast furnace...But, hey, like some visions, I could be mislead, like Jerry Falwell often
was by his own visions of surreality. May a Tinky-Winky doll decorate his grave!
