Just a little nostalgia.

Every time I see a car with a Beaty Chevrolet sticker I think about how long that dealership has been in Knoxville. According to their web site they have been in Knoxville since 1933. It brings back memories of some neighbors many years ago. The father worked at Beaty Chevrolet. They always had cars with horns that played the Chevrolet song ("see the USA in your Chevrolet...").

In researching further, Beaty is not the oldest new car dealer in the area. Knoxville Motor Company, now known as Mercedes-Benz of Knoxville has been in Knoxville since 1915 selling different brands of new cars throughout the years, Jeffries, Nash, American Motors, then Mercedes-Benz in 1962.

Then there is Rodgers Cadillac. They claim to be the "oldest dealer in the Southland since 1898".

All three started out in downtown Knoxville. Beaty Chevrolet was on Broadway, pretty much where the Salvation Army is now. Knoxville Motors was on the north end of Gay Street. I'm pretty sure, but have nothing to back it up but a bad memory, that Rogers Cadillac was on Henley Street. Anyone have the initial location for them?

Tenvoorde Ford in St. Cloud, MN, claims to be the oldest Ford dealership, starting out in 1899. Important note, there is still a Tenvoorde family member running the show. Is there still a member of the Rodgers family with Rodgers Cadillac? How close is Rodgers Cadillac to being the oldest Cadillac dealership in the country?

Downtown dealerships

Rogers Caddilac was on henley st in front of the current Hampton Inn. It was remodeled for an office building during the worlds fair. In 1980 the Mazda dealer was on N Gay at the present location of Auto technicians. Maybe that was the location of Knoxville motors?

Besides Beaty Chevrolet, which seems like a recent departure, Harry Lane Chrystler Plymouth was on Broadway at the site of Broadway Carpets, The Volkswagon dealer was on Fifth near Central.

A reader reports that Roddy Rodgers (Cowan "Roddy" Rodgers III) is the President/Owner of Rodgers Cadillac. I guess I could have looked at their web site further. It also shows Cowan Rodgers IV is a salesman.

Cool.

Hull-Dobbs

Don't know where it was but Dad bought a '62 light blue Ford station wagon there.

Hull Dobbs on Central

The Hull Dobbs bldg is catty-corner from the former Corner Lounge (soon to be Central St. Books).

It has a very cool concrete (almost) circular ramp that allowed cars to go from the first to the second floor of the bldg. That feature is located on the corner closest to Ironwood Studios on Jennings Ave.

Knoxville Motor Company

The old Knoxville Motor Company building is now Knox Area Rescue Ministries. It was supposedly the "World's Oldest Rambler Dealer"

Hull-Dobbs - just down

Hull-Dobbs - just down Central from the Blue Circle, Sears, and Brown's Appliance. I seem to remember too when Knoxville Motor Company was also a Studebaker dealer in the few years before Studebaker-Packard's demise.

And remember Snyder Motors on 5th near Old Knoxville High? I bought a beautiful black Volkswagen Cabriolet there in 1969.

My dad bought his first new car at Rogers & Company on Main and Henley back in 1959, a '60 Pontiac Bonneville 4-door land yacht. He loved that car.

He had talked about getting a new car and Mom put her foot down - no new car until the kitchen was remodeled. So he went the next week and bought the car, waited a few days to stir the pot, then made a trip to Dixie Cabinets on Broadway to pick out the new kitchen.

My new neighbors gutted that kitchen last week in a complete remodel of house.

Where was the Blue Circle on Central? I don't remember that one (I was just a pup when they closed down, but I remember the one in Fountain City and the two downtown).

If I'm not mistaken the Blue

If I'm not mistaken the Blue Circle was just across the side street (Pruett?) from Hull-Dobbs.

Of course I could be wrong, I've slept a few times since then.

Wow! Now Rodgers Cadillac

Wow! Now Rodgers Cadillac (and Airport Cadillac) are closing, after 73 years. How sad, unless Roddy Rodgers no longer wants to be in the business.

Looks like Rogers fought the downsizing and lost. OTOH, KNS articles slam the GM bailout and downsizing, but no where do they say that GM has 9 plants working through their typical 3-week summer shut down because sales are doing so well.

In addition, is has been reported elsewhere that 900 GM dealerships scheduled for closing will now remain open.
