What would the best way be for a non-candidate to enter the presidential race?

How about with a non-announcement?

Talk about your non-surprises.

So, let me get this straight. He sent out an announcement that he'd have an announcement on a conference call, during which he made the announcement that he'd have an announcement, um, later?

How declarative. How definitive. How... presidential?

Someone explain the appeal, please. I've seen downright swooning tributes written about the possibility of this guy getting into the race. Now that this is sorta-kinda-quasi-officially all but a certainty, what can we expect now? More mythology and props?

How about something substantial?

I'm sure it frustrates the hooey out of the other Presidential candidates, Republicans and Democrats, that Fred Thompson has gotten millions in free media attention, didn't have to to debate, been talked about repeatedly on every major TV news show, went about raising money like the rest of 'em (with more success than most), is polling with the front-runners and now is getting more attention by announcing his announcement. He may not win the nomination, but the run-up sounds to me like political genius on the part of Thompson and his campaign.

My guess is the announcement will put an end to the honeymoon. Given the different approach to entering the race, it will be interesting to see if his campaign has a different approach than the others.

I'm tired of the local media

I'm tired of the local media reporting breathlessly on Fred - how he might get in the race, how he's exploring getting into the race, how he's announcing he's going to announce getting into the race, yadda yadda yadda.

Run already. Or not.

If by "genius" you mean "cheating," then yes.

Sounds more to me like the FEC complaint against him has merit.

I'm sure Rove is flattered. Another empty suit making the most out of Karl's tactics. Atwater would be smiling too.

Having a Hollywood following and a baritone voice to match, though, are pluses with the sheeple they gotta impress.
