The United States Army Corps of Engineers has announced plans to remove Peery's Mill Dam in Walland,,Blount County, TN, touting concerns about the ecosystem along the Little River and human safety.

“It's a dangerous, drowning machine,” one Blount County first responder said in a 2024 interview. "Hydraulic forces will catch somebody to pull them down or roll them."

I applaud the Army corp of Engineers for finally agreeing to remove this dam. It has no purpose and endangers users of Little River. Now, maybe the dam in Rockford will be added to the list for removal.

Oh, good grief.

A resolution opposing the removal of the Peery’s Mill Dam was passed by the Blount County Commission on Thursday.

The resolution... cites fears that toxins could be released if the dam is removed.
...
Dr. Valerie J. McCormack with the USACE said the agency had already done a hazardous and toxic waste assessment on sediment samples. She said an environmental study found no evidence of hazardous waste and determined that removing the dam would not cause harm to people.
...
The resolution claims most people in Walland and Townsend oppose the removal. However, when 6 News Jack Ziskin spoke with community members, many shared their support for removal, including Alicia Peery, whose family built the dam.

Sheesh.
