Nikon has announced availability of the new D80 DSLR. This sounds like a killer camera, especially for the money. Put one of their new 18-200 VR lenses on it and you probably have the ultimate, all-around serious amateur DSLR kit for under $2000 ($1750, if you can find them).

Here is a hands-on preview of the D80, and and a thorough review of the 18-200 lens. Both the camera and the lens will likely be popular and hard to get for the next several months.

Here’s a good source for camera reviews.  They have a teaser about the D80.  Megapixel “Magazine” is based in the UK and each month they showcase a cover photo from one of their readers (downloadable as a nice screensaver or desktop image).  They also have articles for the beginner or more advanced photographer.  I have been visiting them for years.  I read their reviews for my old Nikon 950 and my 990 before buying them.

Looks like it also has

Looks like it also has Mirror Lock Up. I'd read about this camera earlier in the week, but I didn't originally see this spec.

You're absolutely right though, this will likely be a hard camera to get your hands on. Ditto for the 18-200VR, it's out of stock most everywhere.

I still love prime lenses, but most people are ditching them for crazy 12-1000mm VR-Crazy-String-Of-Letters-Lenses. That's why i'm so
glad to see this:

Carl Zeiss is going to start producing prime lenses for the Nikon F mount. These won't be insanely popular with everyone though; they're no even auto focus. But when used properly, they should yield sharper results than lenses of the variable focal length variety.

I might have that Zeiss

I might have that Zeiss 1.4/50mm once it comes out.

Old Nikon toys

I'm still using the old ones, in spite of their not being as 'green' as the digitals. I've been shooting negative color film and getting the output on CDs. Here's an F Photomic from 1965, but have recently acquired an F3 which seems high-tech by comparison ..

You know Michael, I prefer

You know Michael, I prefer the old ones. That F3 looks like a tank.

Do you ever shoot color positives? Fuji Velvia and Kodak E100 are both some of my favorites, and i've gotten plenty of nice results from my Leica R9.

This may be self-admission of a serious psychological problem.....but I remember some of life's greatest sensual pleasures came from opening the boxes of brand new Canon 35mm SLR bodies for the very first time and just seeing how clean and jewel-like they appeared. And the smell was even better than a new car with leather!

Yeah, that's pretty sick. But that sure is a gorgeous old FTn !
