About the tires--
"Federal safety officials in June ordered a U.S. tire importer to recall as many as 450,000 tires that it brought from China and sold in the United States...The faulty tires — sold under brand names Westlake, Compass and YKS — have insufficient “gum strips" that could lead to early tread separation, the federal complaint states."
About the toys--
"Mattel apologized Thursday to customers affected by a recall of nearly a million toys from its Fisher-Price division and said the move will cut pretax operating income at the world’s largest toymaker by $30 million. The plastic preschool toys were made in China with paint found to have excessive amounts of lead," and...
"The recall follows another high-profile move from toy maker RC2 Corp., which in June voluntarily recalled 1.5 million wooden railroad toys and set parts from its Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line. RC2 said that the surface paint on certain toys and parts made in China between January 2005 and April 2006 contain lead, affecting 26 components and 23 retailers."

Fisher Price Oh, no...
Them too?
Popular licensed characters
The Mattel/Fisher Price toys relate to characters from the Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer television shows, which are very popular with the wee ones, I understand.
Although I spotted the Mattel story on the front page of the business section, it's one I kinda wish had run in the more widely-read Sections A and B. I would expect that lots of these particular items have been purchased already.
