We went to see Leon Russell at The Shed in Maryville Friday night. It was the first time we've been there, and I admit to being a little apprehensive about going to a concert at a biker hangout. As it turns out, it's a fantastic outdoor venue with a mellow, laid-back vibe.
The staff at Smoky Mt. Harley Davidson and The Shed were all super friendly. The event was well organized and professionally run. They have a great selection of cold brews for $3, and the Stinker's BBQ looked pretty good, too. As you can imagine, there were also some very cool bikes.
Anyway, we went to see living legend Leon Russell, who has played there before a few times. The Mrs. was determined not to miss him again. The guy totally rocked the place out. It's hard to believe he's 71 years old. His band was tight, and he hit the note again and again on old favorites with new arrangements, covers and new (at least to me) material. He put on a solid hour-and-a-half set without ever taking a break or missing a beat. (The band got a break while he did a beautiful solo set.)
He told stories a couple of times between songs about how he got started and about touring with Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishmen. I don't recall him doing this when we've seen him before, and it was a nice personal touch to connect with the audience.
Singer-songwriter Otis Gibbs opened the show. He hails from Indiana and plays out of East Nashville. He sang a bunch of great Americana/bluesy songs and told some funny stories.
The sound system was top-notch, and they had lots of video cameras projecting the show on big screen TVs all over the venue. They (obviously) allow cameras, too. It was a great evening of entertainment. Click the pic above for more photos of the venue and the show.
EXTRA: Cellphone video clip of a solo song taken by the Mrs. after the break, might render on some browsers...

The speech Elton John made to induct Leon Russell into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was good I thought. It's on Youtube. I was surprised LR hadn't been inducted already.

Have not seen that speech, will go look it up. I remember all the talk about Elton John resurrecting Leon Russell's career. Funny, I thought it was the other way around. It's a good album, by the way.

P.S. At the end of the show, Leon Russell said (paraphrasing) "this is where the band walks off the stage and y'all holler for us to come back and play some more. You know I don't like to walk much, so just pretend that we walked off and came back and now we're going to play a little more."

It's about six miles from the airport (easy drive south on 129 to 321, then a couple of miles towards Lenoir City, next to Tractor Supply). We guessed the capacity is about 500 to 600, maybe more.
Wow, thanks for the clip, M.
Wow, thanks for the clip, M. That was exactly the song I was hoping to hear when I clicked it on.
Who'd have thunk it?
Johnny Depp on the steel guitar.
Kidding aside, hated to have missed this one. Good to see some young faces in the crowd as well.
Leon Show
Great photos of a great show. May be the best concert photos of Leon I have seen both professional or not. Was a great show at the Shed. Let's just hope we can get Leon back in the area more often. Once every two to three years is not enough.

Sure. Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 24-120mm f4 AF-S VR lens. That lens is usually my "walking around" lens but I took it because I didn't know if they allowed cameras with bigger lenses. The Shed is pretty accommodating in that regard. All are available light except for one shot of the pedal steel player using built-in flash. Most of the performance photos were at 1600 or 3200 ISO. Some of the shots are crops from the full size images. All were processed from RAW/NEF files using Adobe Lightroom. And thanks for the compliment!
