The Knoxville News Sentinel has another round of endorsements today, and another Republican trifecta for State Senate seats.

Sen. Jamie Woodson in the 6th Senate District is a given. This West Knox candidate is popular with the money pants crowd in Knoxville. Doug Overbey in the 8th Senate District, whose only opposition is a no-name independent, is another given. The KNS likes him because he supports tort reform, which takes away the last line of defense between regular people and big corporations who must be protected at all costs in the Republican trickle-down world.

In the 12th District, the KNS endorses Republican Ken Yager over Democrat Becky Ruppe. As we have mentioned before, this is a must win for Democrats to maintain an even split or have any chance of taking control of the State Senate. One of these candidates will replace Democrat Tommy Kilby, who decided not to run. A Yager win is a Republican pickup that almost guarantees to tip the scales.

Both Yager and Ruppe are qualified. Both have held the office of County Mayor/Executive (Ruppe still does), and Ruppe served on the board of education. Both claim economic development successes in their counties, although some say Yager almost economically developed Roane County out of business. Ruppe has a strong personal story of overcoming hardship and raising kids as a widowed single mother. Ruppe also has the endorsement of Gov. Phil Bredesen.

Going in to the home stretch, though, it appears the stars are aligning against Ruppe. And if she loses, she almost deserves it for running on the "God, gays, and guns" platform with other Tennessee Republicans. Unfortunately, that's what Democrats have to do in that district. Just ask Congressman Lincoln Davis.

But what this is really about is that the KNOXGOB prayer meeting club has instructed the Knoxville News Sentinel that they want a Republican majority in the State Senate to lock in Ron Ramsey as Speaker and Lt. Governor. Then while everyone is distracted by a flurry of anti-abortion, anti-gay, and guns and prayer in school bills, they'll start handing out corporate welfare and raping the environment just like the GOP big boys up in Washington. And if Bredesen were to take a position in Obama's cabinet, Ramsey becomes governor and they can really rock and roll.

So just to recap, Becky Ruppe in the 12th Senate District is a must win for Democrats.

N-S

N-S doesn't mean much in those parts. It's a tough race & Bredesen will help...a bunch.

If McCain gets 55-57% of the vote in the district Ruppe can win.Theory has it that the presidential nominee needs 60% to have meaningful coattails down ballot.

Williams-Faulk is also big.

Not heard if Kurita is making headway
in her write-in bid.Anybody know the down low on this one?

It looks like McCain will

It looks like McCain will get less than 55% in Roane County. I'm calling it for Ruppe by less than 5%.

It's curious that when I talk with Becky I see a divergence from who she is and the campaign that her advisor is running. I don't like it, but if she beats Ken Yager...OK, then.

Yager is a polished campaigner and a lousy executive. Becky Ruppe comes off just the opposite. If we can get her elected, she'll be a great Senator. If not, the rest of the 12th District will learn why Ken couldn't win a third of the vote if it were down to the people who worked for him in Roane County.

Winning

Candidates must do what they gotta do if winning is important & in this race winning is important.

The thing is the folks around Bredesen know how to win & Ruppe has proved she knows a little something about winning too.

Like you said if Ruppe wins..so be it.

In talking to Nick Bishop,a Democratic county commissioner from Morgan County, alot of what works in the district is old fashioned politics.

You just eyeball as many voters as you can & get their vote.I'm sure that's what Ruppe's doing.

I really hope Ruppe wins this thing.

Another great perspective

Another great perspective from our friend WhitesCreek in the district:

Becky has Phil Bredesen working for her, and I bet Ken would kiss a pit bull with lipstick to get that.

Knoxville newspaper, ex-governor of Arkansas, The Haslam family and Pilot Oil... Have you noticed that the folks who endorse Ken Yager aren't from around here?

I bet it would be different if any of them had actually lived here.

Ken has a good deal at Roane State, what with his retirement from the County and teaching position, even though he has been removed from his Dean position it's still good money. He should stick with that.
