The Knoxville News Sentinel explores the Knox County Commission family tree. Plus there's a handy chart. This was in the "local news" section. Maybe it should have been in the "lifestyles" section.

This article paints with too broad a brush
It's unfair to slime Tony Norman for being a teacher married to a teacher and equate that somehow to, say, Scoobie Moore's family ties. I've been married twice -- the first time, I was a college student and I married (duh!) a college student. The second time I married a journalist (albeit of the TV variety). We tend to marry people we share common interests with; people we have contact with; people we have an opportunity to get to know.
I also dislike the tarring of Frank Leuthold -- he was the most respected member of county commission, repeat -- THE MOST RESPECTED member of county commission before his retirement. He was asked to return by John Griess (not by his son, Craig). He has a Ph.D. (is a retired UT professor in the College of Agriculture), was Finance Committee chairman, Pension Committee chairman, and has great expertise with budgets and pensions. Knox County is facing a very difficult situation in funding the deputies' pension. This commission is extremely inexperienced, and, let's face it -- many of them are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. I shudder to think of what they're going to come up with as a solution, but I'm very glad that Frank Leuthold will be sitting on that dais when decisions are made.
If Frank had wanted to remain on county commission in 2002, he could have done so. Nobody was going to beat him. He didn't ask for this. He was asked to come back, and he is doing so, despite some serious family difficulties.
We should be thanking him, not sliming him. It's very unfair to treat honorable, decent people like Frank Leuthold and Tony Norman this way.
Too little context
I agree, Betty.
The story gives me too little context in terms of the prior education and work experiences these family members brought to their current positions. Neither does the story give me any information WRT the backgrounds of other applicants applying for the same jobs these family members ultimately landed. I can't determine, then, if these family members were or were not the best choices for hire.
In a point I made previously on another thread, teachers, in particular, undergo a great deal of job-specific education, training, and testing that may not be applied to any other occupation *except* positions in public schools(or in the relatively fewer private schools in Knox County). Also, it is a recent phenomonen that teachers are retained and/or promoted largely on the basis of their students' performance on standardized tests. In this particular occupation, then, arguments that some (many?)Knox County teachers are employed or remain employed only due to nepotism carry less credence.
I'm not entrenched in any position for or against the hire of people profiled in this story, but these considerations are relevant, I think.
(Some off-the-cuff observations, though: Lee Tramel would see his salary cut in half in the private sector, but Craig Leuthold and Sharon Cawood are underpaid!)
Postscript...
...I don't really think it was the intention of the N-S to "slime" or "tar" every one of the commissioners profiled, though (re: Frank Leuthold and Tony Norman). I suspect the N-S realized an obligation to include all commissioners in a profile like this one, and they intended that we readers would sort out the particulars for ourselves.
One thing that occurred to
One thing that occurred to me is that surely the voters knew about many of these alleged conflicts. The ones who were appointed appear to have less ties than Commissioners who were elected. Craig Leuthold worked for the Trustee's office before he was elected. Everyone knew his father. John Whitehead was Property Assessor before Scott Moore was elected to Commission and before he married Lorie. Same for Dorothy Pinkston, Greg Pinkston and their jobs with the county. They had those before Paul was elected. My guess is the same is true for those married to teachers.
This report is nothing more than inuendo. There is no cite to any vote designed to benefit a relative. I guess with the approval of any budget, there's some benefit. But, this report tries to imply wrongdoing when there's no evidence of any such thing.
As Betty says, many people marry people with whom they share a common interest. Same with friends. Before being elected, many of our current Commissioners had relatives in elected office. They worked in campaigns. Is it any wonder they might want to run for something? Same can be said for many of those who were appointed.
I knew about Greg Pinkston,
I knew about Greg Pinkston, but I didn't know Paul's wife worked for the Sherrif's office until the recent unpleasantness. I live in the 9th district, I vote, and I try to pay attention to the political life of Knox County.
Part of the fault lies, IMO, with the local media. Why didn't they do a story like this at election time?
And I think teachers are different from other county employees. It's one thing to be hired as a teacher because you have the proper credentials; it's another to get a job just for political patronage.
all in the family
I noticed the Shopper called "Lorie Tipton" Moore John Whitehead's step-daughter. Don't know if she is biologically related or not, but I went all through school with her and she went by Lorie Whitehead. I think the Tipton named was from a prior marriage. I've waited for years for the Sentinel to do indepth reporting, they seem to do it away from election time, like no mention of Tyler Harber during Ragsdale's campaign last year. I'm glad they are uncovering things but agree that they shouldn't paint all family members with the same brush, but I bet today's graphic helped sell some papers. Stacey
I agree Betty
Betty I definitely agree with you. And thank goodness we have Frank Leuthold and Tony Norman, who are stand-up guys. It's a shame that a few rotten apples, like Scott Moore, have tainted the entire commission.
Whatever the intention, it
Whatever the intention, it paints them all with the same brush.
City employment
Perhaps more relevant than whose spouse teaches school would be consideration of how many commissioners (Ivan Harmon and Tank Strickland come to mind) work for the city government. Those guys got off scott free, and lord knows how many commissioners have relatives there. County commission frequently funds and/or participates in projects of deep interest to the city administration. - s.
So, now
bbeanster admits that she would write the story differently based on who bbeanster likes or has opinions of. hmm.
What I understood bbeanster to say was
They all should not be painted with the same brush. I agree with that statement. No where did I read that she said she would write it different.
it is still bias
if you paint it, write it or type it.
Silly!
Knox Insider, You argument is silly. For some reason you are trying to pick on bbeanster.
Sam
The statement you made was juvenile. You argument is silly
"Insider 007" indeed seems
"Insider 007" indeed seems to have an axe to grind. And a familiar one, at that. He seems, by inference, to have some sort of problem with my taking up for Frank Leuthold, for example. Could it be that 007 had an interest in the seat to which Frank was appointed? He also seems not to like Chad Tindell, and is kind of spelling and logic-challenged.
