The guy didn't become a racist asshole overnight, so the question is why be associated with this kind of person?
what was he doing before he was imprudent enough to come out in the light of day, and are we supposed to believe the McCain campaign didn't know what he was?

Pardon me if I doubt the sincerity of his apology. As an off-white person who grew up here, I've had the misfortune of knowing way too many people like him, most of them Republicans( in recent years). The GOP hasn't been the Party of Lincoln for a long, long time. My Granddaddy Bean would be ashamed of what his party has become.

A shock and a surprise to his friends and political cohorts, who would never, ever have had reason to expect him to say stuff like that? You have evidence to suggest otherwise?

Should they vet all their local people? Sure. Are people gonna slop through the holes? Sure. Did they handle it correctly when this one did? Seems like it to me.

If you can show that they knew the guy was a pig and let him go on, bring it. I'll be among the first to agree with you that the campaign faulted.

If you can't do any better than you have above, that's okay too. I mean, I think it's pretty weak, but the standards for keeping the natives amused here are pretty f'n low...
