Jail petition results will be announced at the Roane County Commission meeting Monday night. With 6400 signatures turned in and only 3200 needed, the commisioners should get the message that they are out of step with what the rest of the citizenry want and withdraw their current jail proposal and save the county the expense of a referendum.
There are several reasonable plans that could be developed as a viable and acceptable plan B. I like the idea of leaving the jail right where it is and give the administrative procedures a thorough going over to start with. A little thoughful collaboration can knock this out and let us move on to the real challenge facing Roane County...The Schools.
Anybody heard the latest figure for money needed?
I'm hearing numbers greater than $35 million! We don't spend that kind of money unlessit's for an Industrial Park that sits nearly empty.
Cheers,
Steve

Justification for building
Justification for building it? Is Roane Co. jail overcrowding regularly? Losing accreditation, certification or whatever that's called?
$35 Mill, wow, that is a ton of cash. How many beds?
In 1994, Knox County built a 500 bed jail for $33 million. Adding 192 beds to it this year will cost $15 million. Knox County will close an "annex" for a net gain of 100 beds.
We should choose money for education over money for jails for sure. In my experience defendants in criminal cases have a high school degree in about 2 out of 10 cases.
Why doesn't Knox just
Why doesn't Knox just convert the convention center to a jail? It is already empty, plus it already looks like a jail with a greenhouse on the end.
Oops, That was unclear...The
Oops, That was unclear...The jail was to cost 13.4 million. I was talking about school needs which have since been pegged at $40 million over ten years.
I'll try to be more clear in the future.

Jail, Sheriff
It appears Roane County is destined to maintain a continuous national black eye unless leadership changes are made on August 3rd. Citizens have the opportunity to vote March 30 on the jail issue. Consider this roane, we only handle around 10 maximum security prisoners a year. Why do we need to pay for a 150 bed maximum security facility when a new minimum security facility will suffice? A little remodeling on the existing maximum security facility should bring it up to acceptable. Just a note;Gene McClure is the only Sheriff candidate to take a public stand at the commission meeting against moving the jail to Roane State.
When are we going to have a primary in this county? The Sheriff race has 8 candidates vying for this seat. There are only 2 candidates that are actually qualified to hold this office. The Sheriff budget is over 4 million dollars. Just because most of these candidates have been former police officers doesn't make them good administrators. Most of these candidates have no previous supervisory or administrative experience and excuse me but I think we have enough problems in this county without turning over 4 million of the taxpayers money to a deputy. That being said the current sheriff and once again Gene McClure are the only candidates that have managed multi-million dollar budgets. That certainly narrows the field down doesn't it.
I feel it's time for the corruption in this county to cease. Tennessee is the 3rd leading methamphetamine producer in the nation, roane county is 3rd in the state and by all calculations that makes us top 10 in the United States! How did this happen? Can meth actually be stopped in this county? Let me respond;it happened because it was allowed to happen by our local law enforcement. Most of the same men running for sheriff have been wearing a badge the last 10 years why haven't they addressed this problem already? They would have the voters believe that changing badges will change the way they perform their duties, haha. I know to hear them tell it their hands are tied! County officers are free to drive drunk, force female informants to have sex with them and perjure themselves in court without having their jobs terminated. You and I are supposed to believe that they can break the law without punishment but if they enforce the law they will be terminated. Are you as sick of excuses as I am? Vote for the man that will make no excuses! He knows he cannot stop the users but he can stop the production in Roane County. Vote for the man that has a business plan to address the issues that concern the voters. Vote for the man that give the children and youth of Roane County a better chance to grow up without the pressures of meth on every corner. I endorse Gene McClure a proven leader with a history of taking on hard issues and winning.mcclureforsheriff.com

Evidently you haven't actually checked the back ground of all the candidates. There is more to the Sheriff's job than managing the monies as well. And the jail issue is also an area where I feel there is a waste in some of the construction request and no I do not agree with the proposed location either which seems to be the one things we do agree on.
I will agree that Mr.Haggard has some lacking in his administration skills but I must say that I have never known him to abuse his authority as some of those running have when they have had a badge on,which yes includes Mr.McClure when he was once a city officier several years ago. Some say people change with time but I have also found that what one does in his/her past should be a red flag. Especially when they have already shown what they are capable of in the past with a little authority , it really worries me as to what they would be capable of with more authority than that of just an officier, as it should you as well if you know the past. Maybe you should ask your candidate about his actions and abuse of power when he was a city officier.
I will also agree that drugs are a problem in the County but no more so than anywhere else in the U.S. Hopefully with the current removal of our Judge things will change about drug arrest in the county, for that is where the officiers hands have been tied (as you called it). Its evident you haven't attended our courts in the past to see this to be true.
In closing I am curious as to why your candidate actually left law enforcement in the beginning, then was transfered to the water dept, ,then went to harriman then out-of-state. Hope he doesn't think folks here have forgot how he really was. (also heard he said if he didn't winn he was going back south)
how many??
How many arrests and convictions have been made in Roane Co. for meth production?? Answer that and then answer how many parents feel that our children are safe in thier schools?? I live in the part of Roane Co. that Deputy officers are afraid to enter........or don't want to. A time for change is a must when the law enforcement has become citizen enforcement!
Current Administration-RC
I would just like to comment on the current administration. Everyone agrees that we have a drug or meth problem here. Whats has been done by the current admin. to alleviate the drug probs in Roane County? Not much! I live right in the center of it myself as well as many of us live in the rural areas in RC. It is getting worse not better. More and more people are becoming addicted to meth and more and more meth labs are popping up. which leads to these addicts robbing and burglarizing homes and cars to steal tools-jewelry-checks and anything they can get their hands on to get a little bit of cash and get their quick fix. As you can also figure out these addicts use their habit as their excuse to steal and some even molest their own children and others. Roane County is a beautiful place to live but we are having more and more headaches due to these addicts. We all know we have to do something about the current admin. We need to do the right thing and put some one in office who has the right focus and is not just your buddy or your boss's buddy. All you parents think about your own family and how hard you have worked for them, your home and your belongings before you vote. Vote for Gene McClure.
geez
Allow me to reply.
Drugs may be a problem nationwide, but I don't have to deal with Phoenix, or St. Louis. I *do* have to deal with it here, so, I want someone in there who will also take a proactive role.
You don't know Haggard has ever abused his power. All I will say is that you have to wield it to be in danger of abusing it.
I did ask my candidate about abuses, and the things you said. He says you are mudslinging. Names? Dates? Specifics?
He left the Kingston Police Department shortly after a change in Chiefs. What are you supposed to do if you continually disagree? He worked for a period of time in the water department, because he loved Kingston, and saw no reason to leave.
He got an excellent offer. It was more money to support his family, more challenges, and gave him a chance to get away from all of the backdoor politics that occur here.
Why wouldn't he leave? What are you insinuating?
Finally, Judge Austin was but one link in a chain. You think things will be different with just him missing, you are very mistaken. It's time for a changing of the guard, ALL of the guard.
It's time for McClure!

Hi Steve!
Even though I may not agree with everything you say, I appreciate your view on our County.
Thanks for posting on this topic. It's about time someone peeled the carpet back so the roaches will scatter.
Problem is, in our county, the roaches are so used to being left alone, they're like deer, owlishly blinking at the new bright light.
I see you got several positive responses, and one guy throwing baseless, groundless accusations. Welcome to Roane County!! (laughter)
For those not familar with Roane County, we are an island unto ourselves. We live there, but work elsewhere. You never see a patrol car. The roads are seldom paved.
Many like it that way, but there is a growing, vocal faction that is tired of not being able to leave anything but work boots on their porch. Tired of the word meth. Tired of watching taxes increase without visible improvements in the county.
That's why one of the largest elections in history is coming up. With the current screwed up system, it is nearly impossible to beat an incumbent. A lot of people run, split up the vote, and the incumbent weeble-wobbles back in.
There are, in fact, SIX people running for Sheriff. It's 38 days til early voting, but already the rumormongering, backstabbing, whisper campaigning, and other typical shennaniganery has already started.
Like the guy posting above, for instance.
My vote, like the majority, is for Gene McClure for Sheriff. I did my homework. The incumbent has GOT to go. Our Law Enforcement is a national laughingstock. The crime solving rate, thoughtfully provided by a rival, is around twenty percent. The turnover rate of employees is great. Roane County is the only county in the 95 counties that has state legislation giving the county commission power to hire employees, bypassing the sheriff.
So, minus the incumbent, who else? The guy that ran last year couldn't knock the incumbent out. His current campaign is floundering. There's two other guys running with ties to the incumbent. Both worked directly for him. Neither are trying to run. Unless they are waiting til the last day, you rarely see/hear from them.
Then, there's another guy. He shows much promise, but doesn't have all of the necessary qualifications, and community support. Yet. He follows some advice, and does right, in four years he will be just about unstoppable. But now he is like a potato that needs about twenty more minutes.
That leaves Gene McClure. I wasn't even planning to vote in the Sheriffs' race this year until I found out he's running. A former Police Officer, he also has worked as an upper-level management guy, so he is used to leading large companies, and getting results. He's from here, he has community support, he has the guts to actually go after the bad guys, he isn't accepting fund$ from the Big $pecial Interest$, and he has the positive, outgoing personality we need in an accessible Sheriff.
He is the Next Best Hope for our county. And, I am putting all my support behind him.
Sorry to take up the bandwidth, but I wanted another side to the situation presented here.
