The IRS has started publishing a list of organizations that have had their federal tax-exempt status automatically revoked for failing to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS for three consecutive years.

The full Tennessee list is here

There are a some local groups that have dried up and blown away but there are also a few names on the list that seem to be viable organizations. One such group is listed with the address of the Maryville Police Department.

Wonder why an alcoholic beverage distribution company (or some division thereof) had federal tax-exempt status.

with a quickie search all I

with a quickie search all I could find is that they have a 509(a)(2) Charitable Foundation. The Foundation and it's mission statement is a mystery, falling under the "other cultural and historical activities" category.

Hmmmmmmm

Relief for small revoked nonprofits

The IRS is offering transitional relief for small revoked groups. It's one of the best deals I've seen in my four decades of professional involvement with non-profit taxes. If you can honestly say there is still a need for your non-profit, and you feel you can muster the human and other resources needed to sustain it, don't pass up this opportunity to regain your tax exempt status.

There are no shortcuts. You will have to fill out a new exemption application and pay an IRS User Fee. But for organizations with annual gross receipts normally less than $50,000, the User Fee will be reduced to only $100 and reinstatement will be retroactive. The offer is only good through December 31, 2012. You can find the details at (link...).

driving up Chapman Hwy,

driving up Chapman Hwy, really disappointed to see the open air market in Colonial Village is gone. right side of building is replaced with a ministry-based thrift store. I wonder how many of these "thrift stores" are just tax dodges by claiming to offer prayer services and the like. We had a hell of a time getting rid of the nasty flea market in north Knox at the corner of Grainger and Broadway last year. They too, claimed a religious exemption, but no one could find any substantiation of the ministry.
