This Georgia community of about 1,000 people has become little more than a ghost town since Sept. 1, when federal agents began rounding up illegal immigrants.

My concern
What happens if the bottom drops out of the construction industry? There would be millions of illegals here without work, and I don't think they plan on going home.

That's what forced deportation is for.
Would you care to explain
Would you care to explain why state/federal laws regarding immigration should be followed? Or do you prefer to use your smart ass remarks about Jews in WW2 Germany which doesnt have a damn thing to do with illegal immigration? How dare you compare the United States to Nazi Germany.

Worked in Germany!
That's a convenient cop out isn't it? This issue has nothing to do with Germany. It has everything to do with people sneaking into our country and breaking our law. It doesn't matter what country they are from. How can we claim we want homeland security when anyone, including would be terrorists, can just walk into our country at the southern border and set up shop?
It just so happens that the overwhelming majority are coming from Mexico. And this is happening daily with the help and support of the Mexican government. They provide the illegals with maps and instructions showing them where to cross and how to avoid detection. Why does the Mexican government do this? Because the most lucrative money maker for Mexico, besides their oil exports, is the money their invaders send back. They also get another bonus. The invaders that are crossing from Mexico are it's poorest and least educated. When they sneak into our country, they drain our welfare system and our healthcare systems. This works out wonderfully for Mexico because they no longer have to provide services for these people.
They aren't doing jobs Americans don't want. They are doing jobs that their new employers don't want to pay a decent wge for. Why hire an American to do a job for for a decent wage when you can hire an illegal alien, pay him 5 or 6 dollars an hour in cash, and double your profits? This is the only reason illegals are being hired. American employers want to pay less and make bigger profits. To sum it up...greed.
We are facing a peaceful, illegal invasion and occupation by a group of foreigners who have no desire to become citizens. Their only desire is to work in our country, milk our system, and send the proceeds back to their home country. They maintain allegience Mexico.
draconian?
and don't call for forced deportations unless you want to look as draconian as you seem to think...
United States law dealing with illegal immigration calls for people here illegally to be deported. I'm calling for our government to enforce their own law and secure our borders.
If wages were increased for, say blueberry pickers, the price of blueberries wouldn't just go up by a nickel a pound, they'd go up by about 2 times, according to the NJ fruit growers association because of health care and administration costs.
I'm sure the NJ fruit growers assn. is totally unbiased in their assesment. Not. They are most likely one of the larger employers who are breaking the law and employing illegals. If paying more for produce means American citizens are doing the work instead of illegals, then so be it. Just because violating the law makes things easier or more profitable doesn't make it any less a violation of the law. It would make my life easier and more productive if I decided to ignore traffic laws. I'd get to work much faster and I'd have more time to get my work finished, increasing my profits. Does that mean I should go ahead and run red lights?
And you 're right, you won't find any Americans who want to haul and lay bricks for $6-7 dollars an hour. But you'll find plenty of illegals who will because they get paid in cash so they can still collect welfare and foodstamps. And your tax dollars and mine pay for their health care because everytime they're sick, they always run to a hospital emergency room where they are gauranteed free care (free to them). Our taxes also pay for their children to go to school.
Who keeps the wages down?
Why is that? Who keeps the wages down? The illegals? Right.
Actually yes...they play a large part. The flooding of our labor market with illegales causes wages to be depressed across the board. Of course the employers here who hire them shouldn't be fined out the as* and prosecuted.
And since most of them are here with bogus green cards or SS #'s, they don't have much fear in hospitals or Human Services getting their bogus names. The end result is the same. They get free everything on the U.S. taxpayer's dime.
* People shouldn't be afraid of the government...the government should be afraid of the people.
I {heart} propaganda
I find it extremely distressing that a fine chicken processor such as that featured in the story is not allowed to hire as many illegal aliens as they want and will instead probably have to pay a higher rate for legal workers.
I also {heart} pr0paganda designed to support illegal immigration, and I never realize it's pr0paganda either. I fully accept everything the AP tells me as the truth.
But, for those of you who have a clearer idea of what's going on here, there are email addresses of the reporter and his editor here: (link...)
Good for Georgia!
Good for Georgia! We need the same type of enforcement against illegal aliens here in Tennessee (and across the country). Bush says they do jobs Americans don't want. Like most of what Bush says, this is bullsh*t. If there was a decent wage paid, Americans will do any work. Of course that may mean paying a smidgen more for your chicken and produce or paying a little more to get your yard mulched or mowed. If that's what it takes...so be it.
