I'm probably the only one, but I can no longer figure out where the latest posts are. I gave up browsing down the list as it seems the newer posts are now embedded where they are relevant. I tried waiting until the email alert came and using those links, but they also don't seem to take me directly to the newest posts. This seemed to work with the first link under each heading, but if I click on the second comments link, it takes me to the original first post. I suppose the new system is an improvement, but it's been confusing to me and complicated enough to make me give up checking on the latest posts lately. As I checked in often having to figure out what each comment each new post related to was easy for me. Personally, I miss the old system a lot.

If you mean the latest blog
Edit: I think we have determined you are talking about comments.
The latest comments are listed depending on how you have your 'comment viewing options' set. These options appear on any comment page. Set them how you want and click 'save'.
As Michael notes below, the "new" links don't work if your number of comments per page is set lower than the number of comments and the "new" comment is not on the first page. In this cases you can consider upping it to 200 or so.
Hierachical Posts
I think she is talking about the hierarchical posting system you added a few weeks back. I have now gotten used to it. When you go to "new" comments it takes you to the first one you haven't seen. From there you scroll down looking for the "new" flag.
The problem I have is sometimes seeing the "new" indicator. It's in a bright green that I find hard to see.
Again, you can change it to
Again, you can change it to a flat list in order by oldest first or newest first (reverses chronological order) using the "comment viewing options" settings on any comment page, then clicking "save settings".
Or, is this option not showing up for non-administrators or something? (Edit: checked, and the options should be appearing for all users.)
This is how it worked before, but the default settings may have changed so you would need to reset them to your liking.
Same problem
I have the same problem. On the front page of the site, if I click on the "new comments" link for a given entry, I'm dependably deposited anywhere from 2 to 15 comments above the new comments.
For me, the "new comments" links will often stay highlighted even though I have gone to the same comment two or three times (foolishly believing it must really be new this time).
I have my comments set to show oldest first if that makes a difference.
Comments show up as "new"
Comments show up as "new" again whenever they are edited, but they don't move in the list. You may be getting directed to an old comment that has been edited that appears in your list before the new comments.
Ah!
I see. Please forgive me my obtuseness.
view content/recent posts
doesn't that filter for new content?
Yes, it lists blog posts and
Yes, it lists blog posts and other content in reverse chronological order of either a) when it was posted, or b) when the last comment was made.
(I find this a little confusing, because you can't always tell if it is bumped because it is really new content or because a comment has been added, and it doesn't show you who added the last comment, just who originally created the blog post etc.)
Multiple pages
Also, I'm not sure what the "comments per page" setting defaults to under the Comment viewing options, but if the "comments per page" setting is less than the current number of comments (if there is now more than one page), the result is the top of the comments on the first page. That is, when (due to your Comment viewing options) the thread spans more than one page, it does not function as expected when going to new comments.
I was recently experiencing this with the Regal thread as it grew beyond 150 comments. Setting the comments per page up got the new comments functionality back.

That is, when (due to your Comment viewing options) the thread spans more than one page, it does not function as expected when going to new comments.
This is true. It has been that way in the last two (maybe three) versions of the software so I guess they aren't going to fix it.
I set mine to 300 comments per page, and that has worked fine so far, although it takes longer to load the page and won't work if a post ever gets more than 300 comments. (In that case I guess I could see if it can be hacked to include an option for 1000 comments, or "all" or something.)
Right. When the server
Right. When the server delivers, it doesn't take into account what the users settings are for comment counts. It's looking for a named anchor on the page. But that anchor isn't there if the page has been segmented. Stopping at the top is the browser's default in these instances.

Excuse my ignorance but what about cookies?
Carole, have you made any changes to your browser's cookie handling settings recently?
Is that even germane to this issue?

Checking the code, the comment setting are stored in the user record for logged in users if they have ever set them. For anonymous users, they are stored in a session variable (which persist as cookies?). If neither is found, the system default settings are used.
So in Carole's case, she may have never set them so the default settings are being used and these may have changed in the last update. This could apply to anyone. So the solution is to adjust the comment settings to your liking and they will be saved in your user record.
I love it R!
Since you set it up that way over at BV from the get go I have come to love this feature.
And now folks are figuring out if they register and log in they can instantly find those new messages. Thanks again!
In other words, Carole, look
In other words, Carole, look under your Comment viewing options (located just below the final post), and set the "comments per page" setting up to a higher number.

Thanks everyone...
I somehow missed the "comment viewing option". Everything seems smooth as ice cream now...and my cookies are cool too...I got 'em...
Well...
I only noticed the Comment viewing options a few minutes ago, and I learned more than I ever wanted to know about blog threads by reading this thread.
At first it was weird to me that the "new" items were showing up somewhere before the end, but now I like it because I sometimes had trouble figuring out what people were responding to before.
Oh, and my comments per page is set for 150.
