Who would've thunk that GOP Senatorial candidate Bob Corker, the Battlin' Banty Rooster from Chattanooga, in the last week of September, would be moved to blastfax an email proclaiming himself ahead of Harold Ford Jr?
I (and every other political writer in the state, probably) am accustomed to having my inbox deluged with Corker crap. It's been going on for months and months, and the volume is absolutely incredible. I probably delete at least five Corker propaganda pieces a day -- sometimes many more. The latest Corker email, though, beats them all. It's an announcement of a Zogby poll that finds Corker leading Ford by five percentage points.
This is news that this is news, I guess. The smugness that the Corker camp exhibited earlier this election season seems to have evaporated.
Make him spend it all, Junior!

NEW WALL STREET JOURNAL POLL
SHOWS CORKER BEATING FORD BY 5%
Tennesseans Rejecting Ford’s Liberal Washington Talker Record As Corker Increases Lead
Chattanooga, TN – A new poll released today by the Wall Street Journal, and conducted by the respected polling firm Zogby International, shows that Republican U.S. Senate nominee Bob Corker is in great position to win the seat of retiring Sen. Bill Frist. The Wall Street Journal poll shows Corker beating Memphis Congressman Harold Ford Jr. by 5%, 47.6% to 42.4%, an increase from a survey earlier this month.
“This poll just confirms what our internal polling has shown – that once Tennesseans learn about Congressman Ford’s record, the more they agree that he does not share our Tennessee values,” stated Corker Campaign Manager Ben Mitchell. “Tennesseans want their next Senator to be in the mold of Sens. Alexander, Thompson and Baker, and not in the mold of Sens. Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry.”
The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted September 19-25. A poll released by the Wall Street Journal earlier this month also showed Corker beating Ford.
Bob Corker, Republican Candidate for the United States Senate in Tennessee, is the former Mayor of Chattanooga. After a successful career as a businessman, he entered public service to offer conservative solutions and a businessman's focus on results. His achievements as Mayor, as a civic leader, and as former Commissioner of Finance and Administration make him uniquely qualified to chart a constructive course and represent Tennessee values in Washington.

Here's Corker's problem...in 2004, the WSJ/Zogby poll had Kerry within two points of George Bush in Tennessee - from July through October. We all know how that one ended up. My guess is that they're pulling survey sample respondents out of their butts...

It is Zogby Interactive
and interactive polls have plenty of problems.
First, people who want to sign up and get polled, are polled; this is not a random sample of the population. It is asking those who feel most passionately to express it. I think earlier this summer, Bryant was ahead in the Republican primary according to the Zogby poll.
Secondly, it is easily freeped. I had two zogby accounts during the election, so I know all too well about how Kerry was ahead in 2004 and how Tennessee was trending blue at that time. LOL, but my apologies to many (including myself for believing my own creations) for making this state appear a little bluer than it was at that time.
If all the Corker camp can offer is a Zogby poll showing Corker ahead, then it is really a sad state of affairs for them.
Could this be the
Could this be the reason?

I'm with Mike Silence:
I'm with Mike Silence: Tennessee is not "safely red." The state voted for Clinton and Gore, twice. The majority of the Congressional delegation are Dems. The state House (and putatively Senate) are controlled by Dems. That whole meme is put forward by out-of-state journalists who saw Gore lose here, did no research on what happened or why, and who drew lazy conclusions. Sigh.
Actually, I have no idea why I'm sighing, because what this has done is make the Republicans cocky in the extreme, and now they may be preparing to pay dearly for that affectation.
it's tight
i don't know how to put a link on this site but Teagan Goddard's Political Wire had the Zogby poll up today. However, yesterday, the Wire reported both the Cook Report & Congressional Quarterly rated the Corker/Ford race as to close to call & both gave high marks for Jr.'s campaign. The fact is the beanster had alot to do with Ford getting his act together.Last Oct. betty wrote a story blasting Ford.If I recall the story's scathing headline was "No Show Ford".I sent that story to the Ford campaign & told them if this shit kept happening Ford was going to get his ass whipped.I was not alone in that belief.Jr got it together & now Ford's campaign is one of best run outfits this state has ever seen.
Corker keeps sending me dead
Corker keeps sending me dead tree junk mail. I guess his campaign is on stealth mode.
And against Gore once. It's not blue either. Definitely conservative, though.

Zogy predicted kerry and Gore would win big too. Bet the Sentinel will report on this. Stacey
