Bob Dole shouldn't be so hard on himself:

Dole also talked about the failure to get a health care reform bill through Congress in 1993 and 1994 when President Bill Clinton proposed it.

He blamed himself -- and Hillary Clinton -- and finally politics.

"Politics took over," he said. "And you lost."

"Sometimes people fight you just to fight you," he said. "They don't want Reagan to get it, they don't want Obama to get it, so we've got to kill it...

"Health care is one of those things...Now we've got to do something."

I can't...

his involvement in the Clinton impeachment accelerated us down the partisan roadway. He and his ilk may not have started it, but they willingly followed Gingrich's lead and today's atmosphere is the direct result of it.

He can say now that he is for health care reform all he wants to, but it doesn't absolve him of his past partisan bullcrap. AND his voice is not strong enough to turn the Republican Party away from the train wreck that is headed their way. If they continue their obstructionist ways, they are going to become irrelevant to national politics sooner rather than later. A majority of the country wants and/or NEEDS change in the way health care is administered and provided in this country...those who stand in the way are only shooting themselves in the foot.

If they continue their obstructionist ways, they are going to become irrelevant to national politics sooner rather than later.

(I just like repeating that, but) surely they are starting to realize that just saying no isn't going to win them as many votes this time as getting the job done. Although Karl Rove says they're winning, support of Republicans is at new lows in this poll out yesterday.

Would you forgive Bob Dole if Bob Dole brought Howard Baker on the bandwagon and then takes a swing at Mitch McConnel? These 4 guys want to come to the party all of a sudden. The Governator says Do it now! and Bobby Jindal wants Republicans to “join the battle of ideas.” Who else?

There are alternative

There are alternative opinions, Talidapali.....

"Clinton impeachment" - He perjured himself in front of a Federal Grand Jury. Maybe that's who "started it."

"Partisan bullcrap" - Agree with you here but you'll probably want to argue that it started after GW left office?

"turn the Republican Party away from the train wreck" - I think this is right, too, except it looks like the GOP will be driving the train! Of course, we'll need to wait 13 months to find out.

"A majority of the country wants and/or NEEDS change in the way health care is administered" - Again, Tali, I agree 100% with this part of what you say. It's not THAT we need change, it's this PARTICULAR change that nearly 60% of the country is rejecting.

BTW, shooting oneself in the foot seems a small price to pay for fighting for one's beliefs (and rights). Kinda like being impeached by one house of congress is sort of a small price considering the lie you told and who you told it to. Don't cha think? (Don't cha EVER think?)

You might forgive Dole but does Brittany Spears and Viagra? :-)

Let's face it, it's a little late to repair his reputation. I'm happy he has some common sense but he's still a maximally sold out corporate whore just the same.

"Clinton impeachment" - He perjured himself in front of a Federal Grand Jury. Maybe that's who "started it."

No, craven Repugnicants like Bob Barr were pushing it (along with smears about committing murders, etc.) years before they figured how to abuse the special prosecutor statute to get Clinton to lie about an affair that had nothing to with the SP's area of investigation (the simple failed land investment known as Whitewater). Then Mighty Wurlitzer blowholes like Racist Limbaugh leaked (illegally?) the grand jury testimony to hang Clinton in the jury of public opinion. (And both efforts failed! GOP: party of Failure.)

Perjury sounds scary, but many of us think that was a very minor infraction (a politician lying to cover up an affair, and one that hurt the only person more hated by the right than Bill Clinton: Hillary Clinton). Contrast and compare that to the unending quagmire of war that Duhbya sold us with whole cloth conspiracies of lies. Not to mention all the other lies, targeting of political enemies, constitutional shredding and human rights violations by BushCo. No wonder Obama won the Nobel Prize for peace!

Anyway, though Dole's much better than 95% of the GOP, I remember him as one who specifically killed Clinton healthcare with scare tactics not much more honorable than the ones his active party members are now using.

Red rover, red rover,

Why we're breaking with the Blue Dogs on the public option (By Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) Next?
