Shareholders of Florida-based Health Management Associates, which operates locally as Tennova, overwhelmingly approved acquisition by Franklin, TN based Community Health Systems. According to the Nashville Business Journal, the deal is worth $7.6 billion, which includes $3.9 billion in cash with CHA assuming $3.7 billion in HMA debt.

Karen Metz, CEO of Tennova/Physicians Regional Medical Center/St. Mary's Hopsital, named in lawsuit unsealed by the U.S. District Court in Charlotte this month, "allegedly offering kickbacks to doctors to cooperate with a system that ordered unnecessary tests and admitted patients who did not need the care in an effort to raise corporate profits."
