I've been busy for a few days, but just wanted to mention that we have the most arrogant, incompetent, corrupt, criminal government that I can recall in my lifetime.
This stuff with that Foley guy, I hope everyone realizes that the GOP has been sitting on this until it was to their advantage to trot it out as a misdirection from the miserable failure of our Global War on Terror in Iraq, and the fact that Congress just voted to legalize torture, throw out the Geneva Conventions, and elevate the idiot manchild occupant of the White House to a position somewhere above the law and the Constitution.
But forget all that. What everyone wants to know is, was Foley wearing a blue dress? And what IS the age of consent in the District of Columbia anyway?
By all means, let's forget about illegal invasions and torture and murder and no-bid sweetheart contracts and the drowning of a Great American City and whatnot.
And let's forget about our Democratic leadership that has abandoned any pretense of being an opposition party or discharging their duties of oversight of an out of control, corrupt administration. We love being labeled as cowards and weaklings who are soft on terror. Let's add soft on perverts to the list. Thank you sir, I'll have another!
Yes. Instead, let's talk about kinky IMs and that pond-scum-sucking Speaker of the House calling for an FBI investigation.
Does anybody think they will investigate the obstruction of justice and the failure to report a possible crime thus making the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives an accomplice?
Probably not.
But you can bet that the newspapers and cable talking-wobbly-bobble-head idiots will be talking about the swift, decisive action taken by GOP leadership to nip this stuff in the bud. Nip it, I tell you. Right in the bud.
It's yet another example of how they are keeping America safe from assorted invading mongrel hordes, perverts, and tin-pot dictators with imaginary weapons of mass deception in their pants. Which is exactly why you should vote for them in November. Again. Thank you sir, we'll have another!

I hope everyone realizes
I hope everyone realizes that the GOP has been sitting on this until it was to their advantage to trot it out as a misdirection from the miserable failure of our Global War on Terror in Iraq
That was my first thoughts. A sacrifice bunt. The more people that learn how this misdirection scam works the better.
Gingrich Politics
You gotta love the way Gingrich's mind works. Said the GOP had a good enough excuse not to investigate a predatory pedophile, because they were afraid they'd be accused of gay bashing.
That's right. The GOP is all about acting in a way that won't upset liberals!
Second thought is to observe how the GOP typically deals with these type of problems. Foley checks himself into alcohol rehab. Suddenly and magically, he's not the perp; he's the victim! Hell, he's probably not really gay!! It's that horrible alcohol talking. This could happen to anybody!
And by the way, liberals always protect perpetrators as victims; gotta stop that. At least that's the strawman the GOP uses except when shit happens to them.

Foley is a victim times two.
Foley is a victim times two. Now he claims to have been molested by a priest.
And you know, he'd get some
And you know, he'd get some sympathy for it, except his party routinely laughs at the concerns of the less-fortunate amongst our society, and pretty much doesn't give a shit. So it seems hypocritical for them to expect us to excuse this behavior.
Meanwhile, here at home, they're running some television ad making hay out of Harold Ford having gone to some Playboy party. Is Corker sure he wants those drunken photos of his daughters to make the rounds again...?

Trust me, whatever is in
Trust me, whatever is in Sandy Barger's pants is not our problem. It's the party in power. And it's not his party. In his pants or otherwise.
OT: Frist endorses cut and run, wants to cut deal with Taliban
holy shit.
My God
Your comment title summed it up, Anonymous. Holy shit.
Frist is actually advocating the inclusion of the people who defended and gave refuge to Osama bin Laden, who imposed the strictest Sharia law in the world, and who still seek to engage in terrorist acts against the US. Frist is in favor of bringing these monsters into the Afghan government, as if 9/11 never happened.
What a hypocrite. No Republican can now use the words "cut and run" to describe their political opponents, ever again. No Republican can use the phrase "pre-9/11 mentality" to describe anyone but themselves, ever again.
As Gemini so eloquently said on another topic, "Jesus Christ on a pogo stick."

Maybe Frist wants to give
Maybe Frist wants to give the Taliban a hundred dollars apiece to quit abetting al Qaeda.
This whole sick mess makes the Nixon administration look like a Sunday school picnic.
Interesting indeed ...
Huh. What about that. Looks like Frist has turned his back on the GOP and is now talking the Democrat party line IRT the war in the Middle East. Will wonders never cease?
I dunno - I watched a fair
I dunno - I watched a fair amount of CNN coverage tonight and they don't seem willing to give the Rs a pass on the Foley stuff.
And I'm pretty sure I stole "JC on a pogo stick" from Randy. I know I stole it somewhere.
Just heard Bob Woodward talk
Just heard Bob Woodward talk about the "Mission Accomplished" sign that W posed in front of on the aircraft carrier -- you know, the tailhook landing and the flightsuit strapped over his bulging crotch that Mann Coulter went so nutso over? The embarrassingly over-the-top boastthat BushCo said they didn't know nuttin' about and blamed on the military?
Woodruff says that "Mission Accomplished" was actually in W's speech, but got scrubbed. The banner, however, was already in place and couldn't be gotten rid of.
So they just said the Navy guys did it.
Evidently that was a big whopper. Think I'll get that book.
Mind boggling about Frist
And we thought this was the good war. Of the two.
We should wrap this, too, around their necks forever, but frankly I can't see how their necks are already supporting the weight of so much egregiousness.

Here's the snivelling bastard's "clarification":
Bullshit, Bill. You've advocated negotiation with terrorists, plain and simple. You're one of them, you anti-American slimebag. You advocate their inclusion in the puppet government we created, therefore you are one with the terrorists who attacked this country. If the Taliban are part of the Afghan government in any shape or form, then terrorists will have entered that institution. You apparently consider Osama a Republican asset.

Mission
Mission Accomplished:
Yikes.
It was Rumsfeld himself who told Woodward this story. Said he "about died" when he got the text of the speech and saw the "mission accomplished" pronouncement.
WHAT a bunch of liars.
You can't be serious
This stuff with that Foley guy, I hope everyone realizes that the GOP has been sitting on this until it was to their advantage to trot it out as a misdirection from the miserable failure of our Global War on Terror in Iraq
OK, I know you hate Bush. I know you hate the war. I know you hate Republicans of every stripe. But SURELY you can't seriously believe what you are saying here.
Do you honestly believe that the Republican Congress would rather have the national story be about the Republican leadership's being complicit with a child molester and sexual predator than to be about the war? The country is pretty divided about the war, and about what's to be done about it, but outside NAMBLA no one in America holds a brief for sexual predators. And its bad enough that the Republicans had elevated one to a position of prominence - now it turns out that they had reason to believe that he was a predator and they sat on their hands about it.
Look, I know that among the intellectualoids that hang out here the war is THE thing. But the people who will decide the next election are not intellectualoids - they are ordinary folks. A lot of them don't know WHAT to think about the war, if they think about it at all. But ALL of them have kids, had kids, or are related to people that have kids, and ALL of them can relate to a story about child sexual predators. Ordinary folks will react with FAR more vehemence with regard to a story like this than they ever will about stories about the Geneva convention, or even torture directed at people that a lot of voters probably believe have it coming to them anyway.
This scandal has far greater potential to lose congress for the R's than any story about the war, any Woodward book, or any dozen Michael Moore "documentaries." The guys who got elected to the positions they are in may not be brain sugeons and rocket scientists, but they understand how to get elected. And the truth is, a sex scandal is a far worse thing to happen to you in an election year than a bad book, and every one of these guys know it. To suggest that they themselves exposed it because they thought it would distract people from the GWOT is... well, kinda amazing.
A sex scandal is about one
A sex scandal is about one guy (and his victims in this case). It dominates the news for the reasons you state. Failure of policy after policy after policy, foreign and domestic, affects millions of real people's lives here at home and our standing in the world. This is what we should be talking about going into the election.
They probably would have preferred that this not come up, but ABC got the goods and they had to change their plans. In my opinion, they strategerized to make lemonade, and it's working. The Woodward book was briefly discussed on the cable news, but mostly it was all Foley, all the time.
No mention at all of the torture bill, which will go down in history as one of America's worst moments. Nobody ever talks about the health care crisis (that Foley creep will probably get free Cadiallac health insurance coverage for life, maybe that's an angle to get this issue in the news), nobody talks about poverty in America, nobody talks about our failing education system, and nobody except Lou Dobbs talks about jobs, outsourcing, offshore corporations dodging taxes, etc.
Not disagreeing with you, but...
This is about politics. I won't disagree that all the things you are mentioning ought to be more important than a sex scandal, but the fact is that politically a sex scandal is, well, sexier than all the things you mentioned, and thus more likely to move the electorate. My only point is that it is just extremely hard for me to believe that the Rep. leadership would rather the country be talking about this than the things you mentioned. Woodward books get the attention of bloggers and the beltway media; sex scandals get the attention of voters.
Again
a few of the lefty bloggers are saying the Repubs actually did not bring this to light once they found out about it because Foley had drawn a well-funded, credible challenger - financial advisor Tim Mahoney, who sued Foley for slander last month when Foley claimed he fired a bunch of people and sent their jobs to Singapore. It would have cost the GOP millions to recruit a new candidate and defend him, and for once they're in a bit of a financial bind, with a newly-competitive DNC and DSCC.
Was just saying that to a friend over dinner last night. This is really bad news for the GOP. One has to wonder if it's karma, or simply their arrogance and hubris catching up with them.
("Intellectualoids"? Is that the opposite of telling people that, fool me once, you won't get fooled again? ;))

I see the problem --
I see the problem -- diverting attention from (even more) substantive scandals, crimes and deceptions, ie, ones victimizing more than a few unfortunate teenagers -- but I think there's a fairly straightforward way of "having your cake and eating it too" on this one: show what the Foley scandal has in common with any number of other criminal malfeasance by the Republican leadership.
I'd say it something like this:Whenever the GOP "leadership" (scare quotes essential) gets unwelcome news, their first, last, and only instinct is to hide it and hope it goes away -- no matter who else gets hurt:
Foley - check
recent NIE - check
9/11 - check
Katrina - check

I think y'all are
I think y'all are misunderestimating the impact of this thing (an yes, I too mourn the death of substance). It's an unmitigated disaster, flushing $$ millions in high-grade family values
bullshittingbranding down the toilet in a span of hours. The timing couldn't have been worse. Goopers couldn't get their story straight (no pun intended), as most were already spreading across the country for campaign season. If the Dems had any kind of clue, they'd have pivoted from the Foley issue today and flank on national security. The Goopers are completely off their game.
Watch this video of NRCC chair Tom Reynolds. Surrounding himself with little kids was insane. He might as well have said, "Yes, I enjoy using children. The younger the better."
It's an unmitigated
It's an unmitigated disaster, flushing $$ millions in high-grade family values bullshitting branding down the toilet in a span of hours.
That's an excellent point about branding. And that video is a great example of tin-ear politicians. (Jon Stewart featured it last night, I believe.)
Maybe this will work out better than I thought. One more creep out of Congress and the media pushing people's hot buttons on an issue for which the GOP has no defense at the moment. Since people obviously don't care about the war or jobs or health care, maybe this is what Democrats needed to finally get their attention and help them understand that "family values" involve jobs, health care, education, and a lot of other stuff that has nothing to do with what's going on over in Iraq. And the Big Dog going on Fox and get them fired up the week before probably helped.
P.S. I haven't been following this or anything real closely because I've been swamped, but have they figured out who got the IM logs and gave them to ABC? That will be an interesting aspect of this story. The e-mails were bad, but not nearly as damaging as the IM logs. Were the e-mails from government computers? Would that make them public record subject to FOI requests? What about the IM logs? Would they fall under the same sort of rules?
