Corruption, the environment, even the future of county government will all be on the agenda for next week's Knox County Commission meeting.
But now a brand new debate is put into the mix. A new resolution on God is set to be discussed next Monday.
"I think it's important this time of season and then, of course, the times we're having with commission," Commissioner Ivan Harmon said. "Boy, who better to call on than God to help us get through this time?"
Next Monday, Commissioners Ivan Harmon and Greg "Lumpy" Lambert will present a resolution to honor God as the foundation for this country.
"It's not pushing our faith on people," Lambert said. "It's basically us acknowledging that the founders of this country were people of faith."
"I think our religions are safer when our government stays away from them," Mark Harmon said, "And this includes the Knox County Commission."
Thank "God" for Mark Harmon. I think he is the only commissioner with a damn bit of common sense.

Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson, a real founder of our country, would be horrified at these moronic claims by the Knox County Commission. But I suppose God, like patriotism, is the last refuge of the scoundrel.
Which God are we talking about here?
These things are so confusing. Here's a little test to help.

I just sent out the
I just sent out the following email to Knox County Commission (and Mr. Lambert specifically):
Dear Knox County Commission,
I read today with dismay that a proposal is being offered on Monday to "honor the faith of our founding fathers."
I sincerely hope that you will take the time to read each of the links below as they are filled with discussions concerning the faith of our founding fathers.
You will see that many of the famous ones (including Washington, Jefferson & Franklin) were actually Deists or Unitarians (and NOT Christians) and some were quite vehemently opposed to organized religion.

It should be obvious to any rational person that commission should NOT pass the motion. However, I sincerely doubt many of you will be swayed by reason on this.
Therefore, if you do insist on passing it, please try to adhere to the way our founders' referenced God in our national documents.
- Obviously, you would not be modeling anything after the language of the U.S. Constitution, as there is no mention of God in it at all.
- More likely, you would need to leave out "Jesus", "Christ", "Lord", "God" (with no modifier), etc. and instead only reference God through the Deist terms of "The Creator" and "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God" as our founders' chose to do in the Declaration of Independence.
Finally, in case you don't check out any of the links above, consider the Treaty of Tripoli ratified by Congress and signed by our second President (John Adams) - "Article XI: As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion..."
I do hope you will check out the links. There's some interesting discussion on this topic.
Sincerely,
Pan Walker

You'll just confuse them with facts.

"It's not pushing our faith on people," Lambert said. "It's basically us acknowledging that the founders of this country were people of faith."
Um...I "basically" don't need Lumpy conducting any evangelical legislation on my behalf.
This is the absolute pinnacle of arrogance. Heaven help us.
Nice work, Pan
Ivan and Lumpy have found the perfect missing ingredient to make a complete and total clusterf*ck of what's left of CC. Let's just fight over religion from here on out.

Yes, the "debate" is allegedly over illegals, but surely it hasn't excaped your notice that the whole discussion has become very broad and exceedingly nasty. I've been bracing myself to be asked to show my green card.

Well, except without the carbombs and beheadings and stonings and such.
Those things don't happen until the grip is well established
The Taliban is trying to maintain its stranglehold on the morality of the world. It's in competition with radical conservative Christianity for this, that's why there is so much fear and hatred on both sides. They are both extremists in my book, thirsty for power and battling toward the same goal. They each thinking they alone represent God and purity.
It's an abomination against God really and against the denominatons who have been highjacked into believing in extremism. Most Christins and most Muslims just go about their business of trying to be good. They don't hate anyone, and they are very open about respecting other people's beliefs.
The Taliban had a lot of power and now they are trying to keep it, but we're taking over (occupying) their turf. If the conservative Christian religions ever do manage to take over the United States, I have no doubt major violence and even torture would become much more accepted. They're already proving they have a stomach for this sort of thing--as long as it is done to "bad guys".
Torture of the most hideous kind has been carried out by Christians before, especially during the Inquisition. Waterboarding, the rack, imprisonment for being a possible heretic, complete lack of habeus corpus, and the burning of witches because of religious superstitions.
Religions as well as governments need to be kept in check. There always needs to be a balance of power. It is the only thing that protects us here in America. The mechanism to vote out tyrants is still intact, though it is being tampered with more and more.
Many of the posts on Internet sites reveal a willingness to stone, shot, maim and even kill any "bad guys". It's shocking, but there are people in every community who want to have their own kind of "justice". And what they propose isn't pretty.

Well, I've recently learned that there is no such thing as an "illegal" immigrant until adjudicated by a court. Apparently, there is no statute against living in the US without documentation.
But I could be wrong. I read it in a newspaper. I'd like to be educated by a lawyer or somebody who knows.

As a loud and proud publically proclaiming Christian and Church-goer TM, how do you feel about government servants using the political process to further polarize local government?
