DDT
I'm thinking they were scarce because of DDT weakening the eggs. I'm hoping Rikki will stop by to enlighten us.

Yes, herons were among the birds impacted by DDT and other chemicals.
Consensus these days seems to be that DDT and the egg-shell thinning was overhyped. It made for a clean tale of how chemicals can filter through an ecosystem and have unexpected effects, but there was much more going on than just too much DDT in the environment. If all we had done was ban DDT without also instituting the Clean Water Act and other pollution controls, the recovery of the heron and other large, predatory birds would likely have happened more slowly, if at all.

Do y'all remember how in the '70s Blue Herons were very rare around here.
Indeed I do, and have wondered about that many times.
I spent a LOT of time fishing the lakes and rivers growing up and into my early adult years in East Tennessee, and don't recall seeing herons at all.
Maybe I was just too focused on the riffles in the rivers and the snags in the lake coves.
We left in '83 and came back in 2000, and upon my return I remember commenting on all these herons that I hadn't recalled ever seeing before.
Now, I've seen at least three different species, and I guarantee you I never saw a Night Heron or a Green Heron before moving back in 2000.
Blue Herons
Amazing Photo, Randy.

I still have the image of my first heron sighting burned in my brain. It was standing in the winter shallows of Goose Creek and I thought it was the most exotic bird i'd ever seen in Tennessee. Like something out of an oriental painting.
This was in the early '80s.

Jigsha... finally, after all these years!
But seriously, thanks for stopping by and for your comment.
And you, too, JaHu, again.
I'm always surprised by the reaction some photos get.
It just goes to show, you just never know.

Your photo prompted me to register (finally!) so I could comment!

Hello and welcome to Knoxviews jigsha,
Thanks for mentioning the lighting, It's nice how the picture travels from light through darkness back into the light. The more I look at it, the more impressed I become.

Thanks, JaHu.
Andy, the first LR beta I tried was unusable. The 1.1 version is out now, and it's probably worth a free trial download. I'm probably going to keep it.

Randy, I have to agree with Betty, it looks like it could be a painting. It seems surreal. Nice job!

Andy: You must have 10K
I should post the best of what I have so far. I've been focused more on trying to assemble an iMovie rather than picking out the best shots.
I did get a great one of a Magellanic penguin on a big hunk of basalt, though, which I've printed in full color at 13x19. I may try to sell that one.
I've been using Capture NX lately. I really like the spot correction feature, and it doesn't seem to throw out as much data as the Adobe Camera Raw plugin. The Lightroom beta I had wasn't ready for prime time, I don't think. It's frustrating - there's a new damned workflow tool every week. (iPhoto 8 isn't horrible, for that matter.)

Incredible shot and a nice gift on a hot day
Thanks for this beautiful picture. It's so rich and real. I feel like I'm looking out my window into a deep mysterious jungle. Blue herons are my favorite birds.

Thanks, Betty. I liked the splashes of light and the shades of green and the peaceful scene. That shade looks pretty nice right now, too.
Andy: You must have 10K photos you're sorting through from your trip. We can't wait to see some of them. Get busy!
P.S. Did you see my review of Lightroom? Can't remember if you were away when I posted that. Worth a look, if you aren't already using it. The workflow is way better and a lot faster.

In the Galapagos, great blue herons extant in the area have no fleeing instinct. I was able to get within 2 feet of one with my camera.

An Audubon print, A Painting? Sorry Bean, I don't know where my head was? Anyway, Randy, it is still a very nice picture no matter how confused I get.
