We just got back from the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists panel discussion on blogging. There were great questions (as you might expect from a room full of journalists) and lively discussion about the relationship between blogs and the media, the history and future of blogging, and more.

On the panel were journalist/blogger Betty Bean, KNS Editor Jack McElroy, UT law professor and Instapundit Glenn Reynolds (and his lovely wife Helen in the audience), UT Journalism and Electronic Media lecturer (and walking, talking encyclopedia of journalism, newspapers, and blogging) Bob Stepno, Rocky Top Brigade proprietor Johnny Dobbins, and yours truly.

Our host was Dorothy Bowles from the UT School of Journalism and Electronic Media and past president of the East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists. Current president Ed Hooper was also there, and he was most gracious. It was also nice to see Mark Harmon, UT professor of broadcast journalism and newly elected Knox County Commissioner.

We met lots of other great folks, and it was a real pleasure. The Mrs. took some notes and may have recorded the discussion. We will try to sift through all that and post some highlights later.

Bonus, KNS Managing Editor for Multimedia Jack Lail, who is a super nice guy, gave the Mrs. and me a personal tour of the KNS facilities and newsroom. (We got to meet Saul Young, one of the KNS's great photographers who was apparently working late.) Their $25 million+ printing press system is a miracle of modern engineering, capable of cranking out 70,000 newspapers per hour. It was totally awesome.

That was great fun--

Although I felt a little out of place, since I'm not a *real* blogger. Nonetheless, it was great to see old friends and meet some new folks who heretofore had been screennames to me (shoutout to JustJohnny!)
Had to make a public confession that dearly as I love Mr and Mrs SKB, there've been times when I've walked into a meeting that I thought I had to myself, news-wise, seen their bright, shiny faces and not been thrilled to see them (from a selfish, professional POV, of course).
Blogging is changing journalism, and that's for certain.
It was good to see Mark Harmon in attandance. He's going to make an absolutely outstanding county commissioner.

And Christine Jessell's boots rocked!

It is surprising the number

It is surprising the number of scoops that local blogs like this one have had. I wonder how the folks at the News Sentinel feel using local blogs as sources. Of course I have yet to see a credit for KnoxViews except from Michael Silence who always credits.

Ha! had to read that twice to get it.

Wish I could have been there. Teenage son duties came first. I'd like to know more about what was offered up for thought food.

... but a good time anyhow. And I'm glad I've walked and talked my way out of the "mysterious and elusive" category. :-)

Thanks to everybody for coming, and to Dorothy Bowles for putting the event together, complete with virtual appearance by Ted Hitler...

By my careful journalistic count there were about four times as many people in the audience as on the panel. I'd call that a success for Thanksgiving week.

(Happy Thanksgiving SK & Mrs.B... which reminds me I'm almost late to dinner...)
