It could be worse. I can occasionally hear Rush Limbaugh on mine. I need to borrow Up Goose Creek's tin foil hat.

yet strangely the passport

yet strangely the passport is still valid.

Makes me wonder what it's for. But I guess I'm a little nuts for being curious.

The nice Russian lady at the passport office installed mine just under the scalp behind my ear. It was quick and relatively painless.

Doesn't matter whether it's under your ear or on your person, you're still trackable - any place, any time.

But that's not the issue. As easy as it is to steal your cell phone ESN or credit info with the right equipment, it will be just as easy to steal all your passport information including your picture. Any place, any time - the thing is alway "on".

You guys have a chip in your passport?

I't can get annoying, though, like when you walk up to the grocery checkout and the cash register greets you by name and asks how your doctor's office visit went and if everything is ok.

Behind in child support, no passport for you...

According to the Orlando Sentinel (registration required), One reason, they say, passport processing is taking so long is because they are checking everyone for past due child support. If you owe more than $2,500, passport denied!

The few times I traveled

The few times I traveled overseas, I kept track of the location of three things at all times:

1. My passport
2. My American Express card
3. The nearest U.S. Embassy

I have kept my passport current since I was 16 years old. You never know when you might need to get the heck out of Dodge in a hurry.

DMV

I was at the DMV to get my new TN driver's license and the dude sitting next to me had never seen a passport before. We were chatting about various items and he noticed my passport as a form of ID. He asked if it was a military ID and I said it was a passport. He asked what it's for. I wasn't sure he was actually asking me what a passport is for but then I realized he had never seen one before. He said he'd lived around the country too so I was quite a bit surprised. But I've run into lots of generally well-educated people who've never been overseas. So it shouldn't surprise me that the DMV dude hadn't gone either.

Renewals go faster than what is hyped in the media

Roughly 20 percent of the US population has a passport. I had looked this statistic up earlier, because while attending a conference last week, a speaker from Belgium cited a figure of 10 percent as evidence that Americans were far more insular than Europeans.

Regarding time to get a new one: my husband renewed his old one in May '07, paid the "expedite" fee, and got it 3 weeks later. So my hunch is that renewals go through a lot faster.

My daugher warned me there's a huge backlog

If you might need a passport sometime in the next year, you'd better get in line. My daughter's friend has been waiting almost 3 months for hers. They kept assuring her, she'd have it in time for her vacation, but it's looking pretty iffy now. She said it was because of the new rule that people from Canada and other places now have to show a passport to cross the border.

Used once

Dammitt! I need to use mine more as well. Of course, I did most of my globe trotting without benefit or need of a passport as that green ID worked wonders. (that and being on U.S. military ships and aircraft)

We let ours expire about two

We let ours expire about two years ago. We're going to go get them renewed this week, hopefully. I got a haircut and everything.
