I've been lucky enough to have had some terrific jobs in media over my career so far, and among these were the 5 years I spent as a producer with the best local TV newsroom in the country, WBIR-TV. Three weeks or so after my first day at WBIR, Bill Shory also had his first day on the job there as the brand new News Director for Channel 10. One of the many reasons I loved and still treasure my time at WBIR was getting to work with Bill. He was a terrific professional mentor to me, and over the years, Bill and his wife Michelle have also become my dear friends

As Bill's friend, I love having him here in town, but as a fan of his work as a journalist, I'm really thrilled for him that he's just been named News Director at WAVE 3, the NBC affiliate in Louisville.

I know that many other members of the KnoxViews community are also friends with Bill, or at least you know him via the great work he did covering the news here in Ktown, so I wanted to let local folks know his exciting news. Knoxville's loss is definitely Louisville's gain, and as you can tell by this email sent out this morning by the GM at WAVE 3, they're pretty darn happy to have him coming on board:

Subject: WAVE 3 News News Director
Please welcome BILL SHORY to our WAVE 3 News team as news director.

Bill will be a passionate, creative, communicative leader who will empower our team members to deliver compelling content on four screens and recruit viewers.

Bill pushed to work here many years ago and he’s excited to be able to do so now. He brings 20 years of television news management experience, including 11 as news director. As a news director for eight years at WBIR-TV, the top-rated station in Knoxville that won three RTNDA Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence and an SPJ National Ethics in Journalism Award under his direction, Bill helped launch a news presence on multiple new media platforms, including online, mobile, social media and text messaging, in addition to coordinating content for nine hours of local programming daily, including three for our Raycom station in the market, WTNZ-TV.

He led second place WHNT-TV in Huntsville to a first place finish in 12 consecutive ratings periods in a three year run as news director, following a year as assistant news director. As executive producer of special projects for two years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, Bill supervised long-term and investigative reporting, field produced major breaking news and special events, and developed the “Reality Check” franchise and political website project with RTNDF and Annenberg School of Communication.

Bill also worked as assistant news director at WCNC-TV in Charlotte, executive producer at ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, and 10pm producer at WHNT-TV in Huntsville. He began his career as the 6/10pm producer at KJAC-TV in Beaumont/Port Arthur, TX.

Bill is a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio where he was a National Merit Scholar. He is also a Carole Kneeland Project Fellow, a graduate of the Leadership Knoxville Class of 2008, and a University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Associates grad. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee AP Broadcasters Association, Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, and Leadership Knoxville.

Bill brings added insight and perspective to us following a year as Director of Production of Jupiter Entertainment in Knoxville, where he managed the people and product for multiple shows on cable networks, including Discovery, Oxygen, TLC, NatGeo and Animal Planet.

Bill will join us June 28. We welcome as well his wife Michelle, an ESL teacher, and four year old daughter Isabella.

Big congrats Bill!

Shory

The man belongs in a newsroom. His news judgement and commitment to quality reporting are exceptional.

I hate that he will be in Louisville and not here because I will miss lunches, beers and parties with him. But he's going to be where he should be: in a newsroom pushing people to be better.

WAVE is the perennial third place horse in Louisville news

well behind WLKY and WHAS. The ABC affiliate continues to command a lot of attention in the big regional news market, ABC's Diane Sawyer is from Louisville anyway and still has a large following out there.

Everybody up there has that 5, 5:30, and 6 news leading into the national news and a wide assortment of rehash, sh!tz, giggles, and weather early in the morning from the night before leading into the network mornings at 7.

Shory should do well up there and he probably will, there will be plenty of hard news to roll around on, a number of very, very successful UoL athletic programs (migrating to the ACC), and an abundance of huge high dollar local advertisers, something woefully absent in the Knoxville media market.

Shory will do well in a very competitive news environment. Shory won't have to worry about feel good warm and fuzzies in the Louisville news market, it's all hard news with other news properties there from Gannett, Belo, and Hearst. WAVE does not have a 4:00 - 5:00 local love fest like Channel 10, they'd have to move Ellen out of the way to capture that space.

An interesting move to Raycom from Gannett and its well earned reputation in reporting/delivering news, but in Louisville, the news awards and the big prizes are all captured by the Courier Journal year in and year out.

Courier Journal

It's a Gannett newspaper, by the way.

Proud

I'm incredibly proud of this ethical, smart, kind (and cute) guy. He's a great journalist, but an AMAZING husband and father.

A fine journalist. A fine person.

I can think of no finer journalist and no finer man. Newsrooms need more Bill Shorys. His wife and adorable Princess Isabella will make their new hometown a better place too!

So proud of my friend & former boss!

I worked for Bill for seven years. I first met him as an intern & he eventually gave me my first "real" job.

He is a true journalist in every sense & I'm so thankful I had a chance to work with him. I'm a better professional for it. He's also a wonderful person to work with on a personal level & many times went above & beyond to help me in my life outside of work.

Bill's departure is a loss for Knoxville, but a win for TV news.

So long, Bill. I'll always

So long, Bill. I'll always remember the way you stuck it to the UTAD the night we got Kiffined. Happy landings!
(We sure could've used your hard-nosed approach on this Pilot story)

I remember that...

I remember that. As I saw it I thought, "who is that guy? Good for him."

Louisville station lucky to snag Bill Shory

One of the proudest days in my 20+ years journalism career was the evening Bill Shory stood up to outgoing Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin and the UT public relations staff. That stand earned him the Society of Professional Journalists Ethics in Journalism Award. It was well deserved.

He was my news director, mentor, and friend at WBIR-TV for six years (he's still my friend!) The station's motto is a viewer and community focused one called Straight from the Heart. Bill Shory did more than pay it lip service. He lived it. Yes, he was on the front lines for breaking news and severe weather and investigative reports but he also embraced a commitment to community involvement and positive stories. That doesn't make him soft; it makes him balanced.

I'm confident Bill will lead the staff at WAVE to create relevant content in an ethical environment. Knoxville's loss is Louisville's gain.

I suspect he may cheer on the Kentucky basketball team at some point but when it comes to football season: Roll Tide.

Losing a terrific colleague

I'm thrilled for Bill, who truly belongs in a newsroom. But we will miss him here at Jupiter, where he has been a terrific colleague, problem-solver and voice of reason. I wish him all the best!

Congratulations!

So glad to see Shory back in news where he belongs. Was a fan before, but doubled up on the night we were Kiffen'd and Shory stood up for the people.

I've got family in Louisville, so I'll be checking in every now and then. Remember, it's Loo- uh- vul!

Big Catch for my hometown!

My hometown of Louisville KY is so lucky to be getting such an ethical and passionate broadcast journalist! Best of luck to all Shorys on this exciting adventure. (and I promise, you'll LOVE Louisville!)

Too bad we don't have any

Too bad we don't have any journalists left in this state to call bullshit on the state legislature and administration like that. Maybe if it was a sport and there was some way to keep score?

Oh, wait, there is. It's called elections. But the local media doesn't show up to cover such trivialities, so guys like Haslam, Campfield, DesJarlais, Duncan, Ownby, et. al. keep getting elected. And none of them ever even won a football game.

Louisville might get interesting with Gannett buying Belo

Not sure they can hang on to the WHAS gig, although it would be a prime news juggernaut with an award winning newspaper funneling information, stories, analysis, and competition into their TV newsroom.

The ABC affiliate could be sold off to Disney/ABC, maybe TimeWarner, maybe a combination of joint venturers to sneak consolidated media past the regulators.

Interesting time to be in the news business in Louisville.
