CompUSA announced they are closing 126 stores across the U.S.

There is no official list of stores being closed, but a company spokesperson told KnoxViews.com that there are "no store closures in Tennessee."

A news search shows some scattered reports of closings in other states, including North Carolina.

Better customer service would be a start.

No kidding. It's hit or miss, both with stores overall and with employees at any given store.

Fact of the matter is,

Fact of the matter is, CompUSA is getting its butt kicked because its natural clientele -- computer geeks -- can easily go online to purchase most everything that they need, and cheaply.

The reason that you go into a store is either (a) you want/need something immediately, or (b) you want to talk to someone for advice.

I seldom get advice at CompUSA. I almost *always* get attitude. Or ignorance. Frankly, Best Buy gives better customer service; they just don't have the depth of product.

If I say that I need a 500GB eSATA drive, I don't need to answer questions about what I'm going to do with it. If I say that I need 1.0GB Matched Pair PC5300 DDR2 ECC 667MHz 240 Pin FB-DIMM, I'm sure I want 1.0GB Matched Pair PC5300 DDR2 ECC 667MHz 240 Pin FB-DIMM.

I don't have any particular insight into their corporate culture, but I imagine that they work people way too hard and pay them far too little. Their employee turnover rate has to be over 60% every few months -- I hardly ever see the same faces there over time. I have noticed that they've tried getting into a couple of lines of business that didn't fit for them (like home theater & hi-fi). Any one store in any business line can't possibly be all things to all people, so I don't see why they try.

Yep. I was in the market for

Yep. I was in the market for an inexpensive notebook a while back. Compusa had one advertised with a large rebate. It was sold out for online ordering, but the website indicated they were in stock in Knoxville. I called the Knoxville number to make sure. I was unable to actually get someone at the store, I did speak to someone somewhere that assured me they were in stock. I went to the store 20 minutes later and noticed the floor model was even gone. After spending several minutes trying to get some help, an employee told me that they had been out of stock for a few days.

Yeah, when I was shopping

Yeah, when I was shopping for a network media player, they didn't know what it was. Never heard of such a thing. When I asked about an Seagate external SATA drive, they said "the disk drives are over there."

Best Buy had several different network media players, in the computer department, and the salesman could tell me all about the pros and cons of each. (I already had the disk drive from CompUSA so I didn't ask about that.)

Or the APPLE store in the mall. Lots of kids working there but if you just smile and ask them a question they will become your new best friend.

Agree with Andy:

Yep. The online stores have better selection, better prices (which you can easily find using services like PriceGrabber), and customer reviews that help me make a decision.

finally!

The computer craze is finally coming to an end! Great news for typewriter manufacturers and dirty magazine publishers. Dismantle the tubes, the revolution will not be podcast.

Here's just a suggestion...

a friend of mine was recently looking to buy a replacement computer. She checked with the local university in Lexington's surplus department and got a fairly new Apple laptop with about $200 dollars worth of photoshop and drawing software already installed for about $200 dollars total cost. She said the software was actually worth as much or more than she paid for the whole computer. She also said if she had had more money at the time...she would have considered buying a second computer on the spot.

If stores like CompUSA want to compete, they had better come up with a better reason than they have now to get folks to walk through their door.
