A look at the myths which seem to inform Knoxville's State Senator Stacey Campfiled's views, as presented in this recent satellite radio interview. (Huffington Post link)
"On bullying and suicides by gay teens, including two teens in Tennessee in recent months:
"That bullying thing is the biggest lark out there."
"There are sexually confused children who could be pushed into a lifestyle that I don’t think is appropriate with them and it's not for the norm for society, and they don't know how they can get back from that. I think a lot of times these young teens and young children, they find it very hard on themselves and unfortunately some of them commit suicide."
""[Homosexuals] do not naturally reproduce. It has not been proven that it is nature. It happens in nature, but so does beastiality That does not make it right or something we should be teaching in school."
"On what he called the "glorification" of homosexuality in the media:
"Homosexuals represent about 2 to 3 percent of the population yet you look at television and plays and theaters, it's 50 percent of the theaters, probably more than that, 50 percent of the theaters based on something about homosexuality."
"On AIDS:
"Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community -- it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, if I recall."
"My understanding is that it is virtually -- not completely, but virtually -- impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex...very rarely [transmitted]."
"What's the average lifespan of a homosexual? it's very short. Google it yourself."

With due humility for having suggested to Becky Harmon at what Tennessee campground she might want to release her tropical frogs...have I ever said that many painfully ignorant things in a single exchange?!
Have any of us?!
Someone among us should really, really run for that seat...
"My understanding is that it
"My understanding is that it is virtually -- not completely, but virtually -- impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex...very rarely [transmitted]."
That right there is some very dangerous misinformation and totally irresponsible.
The rest of it is just stupid and offensive.
Has anyone ever seen
Has anyone ever seen Campfield in the presence of a female for a non-campaign, non-governmental purpose? Everytime I have ever seen him he was either alone or with a male. Now, does that mean anything? I don't know but, given his startling ignorance about the potential results of heterosexual behavior, it would appear that he is unfamiliar with such behavior.
he has a girlfriend
I've seen her. She's young.
I admit it, I'm surprised. I
I admit it, I'm surprised. I was ready to label him an asexual.
And Hispanic (or so his

the GF, I mean.

My cousins were surprised to
My cousins were surprised to see him with his girlfriend at their grandmother's funeral last year, but only because they didn't know their cousin was dating an arch conservative state senator (they live in another district but Campfield's reputation precedes him, to say the least). Anyway, the weirder part is, her family are all left wing. Her grandmother (the sister of my cousins' deceased grandmother) was a Vogue model in 1930s and 40s New York who spent time with the Maharishi in India during the 60s.
Her great-grandfather was notorious in the county for not belonging to a church and espousing Darwinist views a century ago. Both her grandmother and great-aunt were sent to college "up north" and raised to be free-thinkers. When my cousins' dad started dating my maternal aunt, people in my family said, "Well I hope he doesn't take after his mother's heathen side of the family."
If it's the same girlfriend.
It's a shame this guy gets to
It's a shame this guy gets to roam around with civilized society, worse he's responsible for governing it.
No, the shame is that this
No, the shame is that this moron isn't even from here. As though our homegrown morons were not bad enough, we have taken to importing morons from other areas of the country.
Damnedphool!
The sad thing about this is the number of bigoted Tennesseans who guzzle this shit like a keg o beer.
Knox County has leash laws, they ought to enforce them.
I have to go take a shower
I have to go take a shower now.
A thought
All this anti-gay idiocy is coming from a single guy in his mid-40s? What are we to think?

I'm sure there are those
I'm sure there are those among us who are not familiar with the term 'fag hag'. I have enjoyed the companionship of a couple of them in my life.
Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin is a good place for the terminally straight to gain an inkling.
Being seen in the company of members of the opposite sex don't mean crap. For two years I had a very attractive (female) roommate.
As an aside...
Where (or how) did Campfield get that street sign hanging above his desk? Just curious.
Everywhere signs
I knew I had an attitude problem when I saw a Men at Work sign and just sniffed and thought, not! Your admin was just unhappy you didn't give equal time to women.
How does he keep his skull from imploding?
I mean, I thought nature abhorred a vacuum.
Duh, nature won't go anywhere
Duh, nature won't go anywhere near Campfield's skull.
