The Camp Montvale property is being foreclosed and going up for auction. But this may be a good thing.
According to a notice in the Maryville paper, Sam Furrow holds the note and the developer who purchased the land is in default. The property will be auctioned on the Blount Co. Courthouse steps at 11AM on Thursday, December 10th 2009. Furrow is reserving the right to bid on the property.
The developer, The Harmony Group, acquired Camp Montvale from the YMCA in 2006 as part of a larger land purchase for a controversial mountaintop residential development. The developer agreed to lease it back to YMCA so they could reopen the camp.
Furrow acquired the note in 2008, after the YMCA had already agreed to give the developer more time on their payments. A September news report in the Maryville paper said Furrow is seeking to acquire full ownership of the property so he can place it under a conservation easement.

The mountains and the adjacent foothills area are unique in all the world and something we should hand down and treat like the consummate family heirloom. How may things are there in existence that every single person on earth could enjoy?
I could go with some buffer zones on the edge of national parks and national forests with significant development restrictions.

There is some property in Maryville that was sold off a few years ago and some of the young Alexanders and Haslams bought it. Is it this or part of Blackberry? Anyway, hope the camp is still open.
