What: Books Sandwiched In welcomes Dr. Nick Geidner
When: Wednesday, April 25, 2018 - 12:00pm
Where: East Tennessee History Center
Knox County Public Library invites the public to join Join Dr. Nick Geidner for a discussion of Whiplash: How to Survive Our Faster Future by Joi Ito and Jeff Howe. Bring your lunch or pick up something downtown. Drinks are available for fifty cents. Reading the book is optional.
In Whiplash, Ito and Howe lay out the unprecedented changes in a world that is more complex and volatile today than at any other time in our history. The tools of our modern existence are getting faster, cheaper, and smaller at an exponential rate, just as billions of strangers around the world are suddenly just one click or tweet or post away from each other. When these two revolutions joined, an explosive force was unleashed that is transforming every aspect of society, from business to culture and from the public sphere to our most private moments.
The authors present nine organizing principles for navigating and surviving this tumultuous period in all facets of our lives and in our organizations. From strategically embracing risks rather than mitigating them to drawing inspiration and innovative ideas from your existing networks, this dynamic blueprint can help you rethink your approach to the future, which is actually here already.
Dr. Geidner is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media at the University of Tennessee. He is originally from Youngstown, Ohio and earned his PhD at Ohio State University. Dr. Geidner’s research concentrates on the changing dynamic between journalism and individuals. He is also directs Land Grant Films that recently produced a student-led documentary about Imagination Library, titled 100 Million Stories.
